Originally, döner was invented in Bursa, Turkey during the 19th century. However, the introduction of similar foods like gyros and shawarma were not before the mid-20th century. These are also prepared with the same cooking technique as the original Turkish döner which is to slowly turn a meat cone on a rotisserie and to cut it into thin slices. Additionally, these dishes have the same meaning with döner which is "to turn." For example, gyros means "turn" in Greek. Likewise, the Lebanese shawarma comes from the Turkish word "çevirme," which means "turning."
