Maybe we Americans should stop abbreviating and go back to calling it association football for clarity's sake.

or better yet, maybe u Americans should have just called ur American football "soccer" to begin with and leave the name "football" to the sport that actually uses the feet. Also, why do u call it a "touchdown" when u don't even touch it down?? Weird...
+5
level 13

I don't think we even know why we started calling football football and soccer soccer. I think the way we American-ize the sport is just weird. Like, all the leagues in the world work the same way, with no playoffs. It's all just regular season and whoever wins, wins. No playoffs (I think that's how it is everywhere). But in America, we have to be different. We have like two different leagues and we have elimination playoffs just like all of our other sports. If we are gonna be different and call it soccer (unfortunately), at least make our leagues work the same. Plus we have a Canadian team in an American league? Ugh, I just hate the whole thing. Sorry to get on my soap box, but I could gripe forever about this. And the whole switching to the metric system thing (It's so much easier! Everything is in tens!). Sorry to get preachy. I just hate when a sport is ruined by something.

Spankapotomus, I can understand the USA having two top leagues then playoffs, its a large country and in Europe teams complain about how tiring it is to travel to a different country for the champions league but London to Paris is nothing compared to New York to Seattle. Also we have welsh teams in the English divisions such as Cardiff and Swansea so I can also understand having the best Canadian team in the MLS. Although it does annoy me that you call it soccer.

and why oh why when an American team wins there league are they known as the WORLD champions??? when Manchester United or whoever win the Premier League they don't become World Champions. simply the English champions. you surely cannot be called the world champions when your only playing against teams from your own country

There is no version of "football" called football because the ball is played mainly with feet. The word football comes from the fact the games are played on foot and not on horseback.

It wasn't called the Champion's League until recently. Prior to 1992 it was the European Champion's Cup and you actually had to be your country's Champions (or the current holder) to qualify. Nowadays you can qualify without being a champion and also have a chance at the Europa League if you get knocked in the group stage. Just a money spinning exercise to squeeze as much dosh as possible out of the average football fan to pay stupid wages. UTV
