1900-1960
Paintings with choppy brushwork and thick dabs of paint which lack clear details, giving the painting an overall soft and whimsical look. Considered the beginning of modern art.
Impressionism
Ditched the fuzziness of its predecessor and put a strong emphasis on form and featured strong outlines.
Post-Impressionism
Uses objects to represent abstract ideas relating to the darker aspects of life, death, and the human condition.
Symbolism
Features splotches and patches of shockingly bright colors in simplified scenes.
Fauvism
Distorted or exaggerated scenes done with raw brush strokes which depict an overall feeling of alienation and anguish.
