Hmm, there is a lot of overlap between the two, but I don't think they're the same thing. Rom-com just means a romantic comedy, which are often marketed towards only women making them chick flicks, but not all rom-coms are marketed at only women. One example of this in my opinion would be Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Chick flicks also don't have to be romantic comedies. There are a lot of romanic dramas that are marketed at only women and therefore would be considered chick flicks without being rom-coms. The most popular example I can think of is The Notebook. There certainly is a lot of overlap between the two, but I wouldn't say that they're the same thing.
