This was some huge work to do.

However, for a few countries (mainly in Africa) I couldn't find 'worldwide' superlatives, but only 'continental' superlatives. Furthermore, I had to use the world"only" for a few countries but I was hoping I would not have to.

If you know any other superlative that would replace one of the above-mentioned countries, let me know :)

The first country to salute the USA was actually the Netherlands. Johannes DeGraaff, the governor of the island of Sint Eustatius (Statia), which at the time was a colony of the Netherlands and is now a region (not a Territory) of the Netherlands, ordered an 11 gun return salute to the US Ship "Andrew Doria" on 16 November 1776.

One single guy isn't enough to recognize (not salute) a country! The official Netherlands recognized the US in 1782 as the third country to do so.
