Presidents Who Cut the National Debt in a Fiscal Year
Name the United States presidents who ended a fiscal year with less federal government debt that the fiscal year started with. To be clear: this does not necessarily mean the federal government had less debt when they left office than when they came into office. This is based on nominal dollar amounts. This does not necessarily mean they had a budget surplus. There could have been deflation, and some years which experienced a budget surplus may not be on here because the interest on the previously outstanding debt was greater in magnitude than the surplus.
