seriously? the brits invented the word soccer...americans just adopted it. stop thinking americans always change everything up to some uncouth thing just to screw with everything...england made up the word soccer, we just took it on.
Spankapotomus, I can understand the USA having two top leagues then playoffs, its a large country and in Europe teams complain about how tiring it is to travel to a different country for the champions league but London to Paris is nothing compared to New York to Seattle. Also we have welsh teams in the English divisions such as Cardiff and Swansea so I can also understand having the best Canadian team in the MLS. Although it does annoy me that you call it soccer.
and why oh why when an American team wins there league are they known as the WORLD champions??? when Manchester United or whoever win the Premier League they don't become World Champions. simply the English champions. you surely cannot be called the world champions when your only playing against teams from your own country
It's called marketing and promotion. They sell more tickets if people think they are attending a world championship rather than a national championship.
I know this comment is old but in Ireland we have Gaelic football and soccer. In Gaelic football you do a mixture of kicking the ball with your feet and punching the ball with your hands.
There is no version of "football" called football because the ball is played mainly with feet. The word football comes from the fact the games are played on foot and not on horseback.
That would be your opinion chempstead98. There is only one American football league that matters and that is the NFL. Any other league that exists is for other countries or has no major importance in this country.
Well, Real just won the Champions League yesterday, but I don't know why it would've been a selected quiz in March of 2012, but it's good to expand your knowledge with these quizzes you might not like.
Replying to a comment from 4 years ago. :) Back then, we only had 10 featured quizzes per week. Now we have 28! I also ensure now that at least 3 of the daily quizzes have nothing to do with sports.
im a big fan of messi and ronaldo, among many others and im a man united fan. whats wrong with admiring brilliant players and teams? maybe YOU know nothing of football
@DudiJG: Yeah, but those teams are named Dinamo Bucharest and Stueaua Bucharest. Everton is from Liverpool, but don't have Liverpool written anywhere in their name.
But it's inconsistent that "Madrid" is accepted for Real Madrid, and doesn't hold with any of the above arguments for doing so. So please accept Bucharest, Belgrade, etc. or don't accept Madrid
Same for Turin, Rotterdam and Lisbon. Why is only the club name accepted with those, and not the city? Even if there are several clubs from the same city/town, the ones on the list are usually the most well known. As Chip said, Madrid is accepted (although there are two different ones), as is Munich (without Bayern), although there is also 1860 Munich. Clearly no consistency here.
Well, when people say Munich or Madrid in football context, everyone understands they refer to Bayern and Real. That doesn't really work for those other cities. It's not really about a consistent ''rule''.
It wasn't called the Champion's League until recently. Prior to 1992 it was the European Champion's Cup and you actually had to be your country's Champions (or the current holder) to qualify. Nowadays you can qualify without being a champion and also have a chance at the Europa League if you get knocked in the group stage. Just a money spinning exercise to squeeze as much dosh as possible out of the average football fan to pay stupid wages. UTV
They haven't paid off enough refs yet. Once they get that right, you'll see their opponents having players dubiously red-carded or being denied clear penalties in critical matches, as so frequently happens for some of the perennial powerhouses.
Anyone interested in English Football take my quiz here http://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/134559/english-cities-with-multiple-football-teams few more on my page
There is another team called Torino. Juventus is known as Juve or Juventus and Milan as Milano or Milan. It's the same with Inter and Milan, the latter name does not work for the former.
I got 39/63 (62%) with just Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, A.C. Milan, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Marseille. Of course, that's worth 7/22 and 0 points.
Arsenal got to the 2006 final but were cheated by the refs and lost 2-1 against Barcelona after losing our keeper and being 1-0 up beforehand... To this day we haven't won a Champions League.
Do you want to do this quiz but with the yellow box? (Only one year at a time). It's much harder. Check it out on my account please: https://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/252813/champions-league-winners-each-year
Interesting that in English they use the translated form of Red Star for Crvena Zvezda. In Polish we just use the Serbian version Crvena Zvezda, not translated Polish version Czerwona Gwiazda. :) Also Red Star seems to be the only Slavic football club whose name is translated this way. I've never heard of Vistula Krakow or Miner Donetsk. :)
Nice and easy! Never forget the back-to-back Nottingham Forest wins! Although I do have to admit I didn’t remember Hamburg for a while. When I looked them up for more information, it said “Hamburger SV”!!! 🤣🤣🤣
for all sports that claim to be football (soccar football, american football, australian rules football, and rugby football.
soccar should be called football, american football should be called grit iron, australian rules football should by called AFL, and rugby football should be called rugby
I know I can select others to do- and have done, but I only have a short time each day to play.
thanks in advance :-)
i.e. : "Milan" works but not "Turin" ...
Thanks
Nice quiz. If you like this one, perhaps check out my quiz.
I made a quiz where you need to link players to their club history.
