1971. This song was written by Kris Kristofferson. Though many have recorded it, this artist's version is the best known. it reached #1, but she didn't get to enjoy it. She died at age 27 in late 1970. Kristofferson said he was trying to convey the despair of the last scene of Federico Fellini’s film La Strada.
