Funny that Inverness had a higher population than any town in southern Scotland.

It just shows how densely populated Scotland has always been. Looking at the data for ~2k cities, only Aberdeen, Perth (or likely Scone, its capital at the time) and St Andrews seem to make it when it comes to Scotland.

I've got a history of the Anarchy in England which says that early in the 12th century, the biggest town in Scotland was Berwick upon Tweed, but it was sacked by one or other English king. Presumably that meant the population fell. I only have the vaguest recollection.

I really enjoyed the quiz, thank you - although I only got half marks, when I looked at the answers I hadn't got there were only four or five where I thought "I should really have guessed that". And to think that 3000 today is basically the size of a middling village...

Thanks! There will always be disagreements between different sources on city data like this. Berwick-upon-Tweed was listed at a mere 1k at this point in time.

The country would take a major blow to its population count with the Black Death killing a large amount, which did result in some of the cities never rising back to the same level of prominence, like Winchester would drop from 15k to little over 1k and wouldn't recover until the 19th century.
