Top Ten North American Subnational Flags

Guess the top ten flags from the United States and Canada according to a 2001 survey conducted by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA).
The survey included 72 flags "representing states of the U.S. and provinces of Canada, as well as some current and former territories."

Might need to rename your quiz. The District of Columbia isn't a state. The Marshall Islands certainly aren't a state! Though still defended by the US, the Marshall Islands are a sovereign nation and UN member state.

Thanks for your comment! I've edited the title of the quiz and added some more clarifying information in the description. Here is a quote from one of the survey's creators: "Casting our net wide, we asked respondents to rate 72 different flags, representing states of the U.S. and provinces of Canada, as well as some current and former territories." I recognize the District of Columbia is not state, and the quote above doesn't clarify why the Marshall Islands were included, but I did not make the survey; I just put the top ten flags into a quiz. The five inhabited U.S. insular areas were included, as well as Micronesia and the Marshall Islands (Palau, the third independent state in free association with the U.S., was not). Again, thanks for the comment. I hope the changes I've made are helpful.

I don't know who that study polled but Maryland's flag is ugly and DC's brings no joy. And Puerto Rico and Texas are so similar that Texas, the clearly inferior design, should have been left off.

It polled NAVA members and the public. Given that more than half of US state flags are of the seal-on-a-bedsheet variety, I find it unsurprising that distinctive flags like Maryland and DC are well-liked. Perhaps lots of Texans voted in favor of their flag.

Why does DC appear when I type "Turks" as in Turks and Caicos? I was clearly guessing, but what's the connection?

I had set the type-in for District of Columbia to accept anything that contained DC, so it must've taken your answer from the d in 'and' and the first c in 'caicos.' I've fixed it so thanks for your creative guessing!
