A chart of hockey teams and their moves over the years would be boggling.

Go, Whalers!

Oh. They did.

Depending on what you define as the team, either the New Orleans Pelicans/Hornets or the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets should be on here.

so you're saying that one should be on here but not both?

Well, 1 was founded in 1988 and the other 2002. So I agree, 1 should be on here. I tried Pelicans multiple times kept wondering why they didn't show.

"On January 24, 2013, the franchise announced it would rename itself the Pelicans,[10] effective after the conclusion of the 2012–13 season. The Charlotte Hornets' name, history, and records from 1988 to 2002 were returned to its original city to be used by the then Charlotte Bobcats franchise, which subsequently became the Charlotte Hornets, starting May 20, 2014.[1]"

One of them needs to be on here. The Pelicans are listed as being founded in 2002, so they should be on the quiz. The Hornets are listed as being founded in 1988.

jayhiatt is correct. ... The Hornets (est. 1988) moved to New Orleans and were the New Orleans Hornets. The Charlotte Bobcats entered the league in 2004. ... When the Bobcats name didn't catch on, they wanted to change it back to Hornets. Much like the Browns/Ravens situation, the New Orleans Hornets changed their name to the Pelicans and established "new" records, etc. The Charlotte franchise then reclaimed the Hornets name and have all the records from the original Hornets franchise.

Given how the Browns/Ravens are handled here, I'd say it'd be best to the Pelicans as the newest team. The date could be 2003 (when records begin), or 2013 (when they officially were rebranded).

Correct. The Bobcats were an expansion team in 2002 that changed their name in 2013, but nonetheless an expansion team in 2002.

Listing the Baltimore Ravens is just plain wrong. The Ravens moved to Baltimore from Cleveland and changed their name from Browns to Ravens. They are not an expansion team. They have been in the NFL for many decades. The Cleveland Browns are the expansion team. They began playing their games in 1999. If you're going to list teams that moved, you're going to need a bigger list.

We know. However, when the Browns began playing again, they officially inherited the statistics from that the pre-1996 Browns had accumulated. Also, the Ravens are filled in to avoid confusion to satisfy those who consider them to be an expansion team.

They had an expansion draft for the browns

The Browns always retained the records of the original Browns franchise, knowing they would be revived at a later date. The Ravens never had the Browns franchise records, so it was a new franchise.

If you are counting the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL, then why not the Washington Nationals in the MLB? How do those differ?

We are not counting the Ravens in the NFL. They have been filled in already and you do not have to guess them to complete the quiz.

The quiz is correct here in regard to the Browns/Ravens. ... Even though the "New Browns" were the expansion, all NFL statistical records will show that the Ravens are the new franchise. If you look at the establishment date of each franchise, the Browns will claim 1946. The Ravens will say 1996.

But why did you count the move of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg? Maybe there's something there that I fail to see, but I don't think this case is different than other teams that moved.
+2
Level 61

Because the Thrashers started in 1999 and then moved to Winnipeg to become the Jets again. Even though they moved the Thrashers were still a new franchise in 1999 unlike the Ravens/Browns. The thrashers were started when the Flames left a few years before to Calgary. The whole franchise started in 1999 which keeps them on the list unlike what you want to be cleared up with the Browns/Ravens.

The Thrashers arrived in Atlanta about twenty years after the Flames left for Calgary. Gary Bettman (and/or whoever has been pulling his strings) has been committed to "non-traditional markets" for a generation now. That means that Quebec gets passed over continuously and Winnipeg was allowed to move out at the first sign of trouble. But Atlanta was deemed worth a second go, and none of the ridiculousness in Arizona for twenty-five years can stop the NHL's commitment to Phoenix.

Because when the Expos moved to Washington, their franchise history and records moved with them. That did not happen for the Ravens. All Browns records pre-1996 remained with the Browns franchise reactivated in 1999. Only the Browns players and coaches moved to Baltimore.

If you want more English featured quizzes, I'd suggest trying to try and spend a higher % of your time on the site making quizzes that have at least a 5-10% chance of getting featured. Even if they don't get featured, often they get a significant amount of takes which add up.

Even if they don't get featured, their takes are still significant, our non-featured quizzes have been taken 21,057 times, without which we would only be at rank #131.

It's also important to make the quizzes aesthetically pleasing, and to treat them like art.

would it not make sense to display "Florida Marlins" and "Tampa Bay Devil Rays" since those were the names of the expansion team when expanded? I know it is basically a moot detail, but it would help with consistency
