#12: The play centers on a shopkeeper who means well but who has disguise herself as a mean relative in order to get by. Sichuan is intended to be an allegory for all places where people are exploited. In 1949, Brecht added that Sichuan is not one of these places anymore since the establishment of the People's Republic. The play is fine, but its author was not always on the right side of history.
