Th U. S. invaded Grenada in 1983 to rescue students at the Medical School there after a bloody coup d'etat and the assassination of its Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop. Bishop, who had established a Socialist form of government on the island was, nonetheless, considered a moderate and amenable to discussions with the US and non socialist states. This was opposed by Bernard Coard (his erstwhile second) and his faction, who arrested and then assassinated Bishop. Due to the turmoil and Coard's actions, the U. S. invaded to evacuate students of the Medical School. That Soviet troops were on the island (constructing a new airport) was already known to the U.S. and was of secondary importance.

Interesting quiz, lots of new information for me. One quibble: Brezhnev should be the answer for the 1964 question but it is not accepted. You even spell it that way a few questions later. I tried several variations but always with the H, and so did not get credit. Thanks!
