A Case on Banishment

+13

I write this as a sequel, of sorts, to my latest blog. Unlike the last one, however, this is not an assortment of topics but rather unisubjectal (new word alert). But I’m getting off track here, let’s begin.

Ban.

A word that sparks fear in the heart of most JetPunkers. For many, JetPunk is a large part of their life and to be banned would be like losing a family heirloom. Even I used to feel this way, back when I was more active. The terror of potentially being banned drives users to extremes. Some try to salvage themselves by groveling, begging, and pleading. Others will try to report another user in hopes they will get a pass because they "helped out". Some users will post aged jokes about their fears of getting banned. None of these I see as very positive.

Though I must concede I’m no saint, I’ve walked on eggshells and the past and probably still do now. But if recall correctly I think I just accepted it, maybe threw in an apology or two. I’m not sure. I do remember that l started to venture onto other quiz sites in case I got banned. I spent a lot of time on Ian Fisher and Hugequiz (is that what’s it called?) and I think, I may have to check again, I got some high score on the world grid map, the one where you have to guess the cities in the grid. I believe I posted a question on the Russia quiz, or was it an answer to a question, about why some oblasts and other administrative subdivisions were split. The owner of the site even responded. Real nice guy. I haven’t checked on the site in a while, I wonder how it’s doing.

Good cats, I’ve gotten off track. I suppose this would be a good time to talk about the next phase of banishment: the immediate post-ban period. This one I’ve fallen victim to, posting not one but two blogs about banned users. Someone, I think it was Stewart, reminded me that everybody knows when someone is banned, but somewhat ironically nobody cares. It’s just a fact of life that people will get banned, so don’t spam crying emojis on the fifteen word memorial blog.

Sometimes, a user will get banned and come back. This part has never made sense to me. They got banned for a reason, yet they somehow come back multiple times? YakosaysBotswana would be a good example. He got banned some six times, yet always came back. Currently he still has an active account, which boggles my mind. But coming back isn’t limited to him. Plenty of users will get banned and then immediately defy this and create a new account. We really need to crack down on this sort of thing.

I’m not sure where I was going (if anywhere) with this, and it may just be a short ramble, but I just needed to get my thoughts out. I hope you enjoyed the read.

I’ve already deleted one hot-headed comment from a user who didn’t read the blog. I’d hate to have to do it again.

"Sometimes, a user will get banned and come back. This part has never made sense to me. They got banned for a reason, yet they somehow come back multiple times?"

This is because most people who get banned are privileged children who do not understand the meaning of punishment. They do not understand what they did wrong, and so do not accept the banishment and choose to defy it.

Those found to defy the ban are often given "second chances" many times, because the effort it takes to keep banning those who keep coming back is not cost-efficient and is a waste of time to maintain, given how just QM and I are the only ones looking after JetPunk.

Those who did wrong need to accept it and leave JetPunk, they were banned for good reason and continually causing drama (and not learning from mistakes) just wastes our time and means other things we want to work on fail to make progress as we have to moderate so much more because of them. They ruin it for everybody, due to their selfishness.

Well said. Interesting that those users, the ones who claim they love the site so much they can’t quit, apparently don’t love it enough to stop causing drama.

They'll even find ways to falsely justify their actions are for the good of the community, despite being driven by pure selfishness.

Thanks for the blog Baxter, it was definitely refreshing to hear there are those out there that understand this.

Also, if they love that much the site, for stepping on the ban, why they keep practicing the same bad attitudes, like spamming? Toxicity?

That blog was really good to read. I don’t think my QuizmasterandStewartbanningmephobia indices will decrease, but these questions were quite interesting

I don’t think banned people should return, but when they do it is what it is. Sometimes they leave a good legacy, sometimes they just get banned again. In most cases people are given a warning before banishment, so their actions following the warning are technically their second chance. I think if they screw up after that again and again, they don’t deserve to come back.

Yeah it's quite annoying of a thing to do. They tend to ban evade a ton but wouldn't actually spend the time and effort to understand what led to their ban, so they end up getting banned over and over again, which not only drains admins' energy but also stirs up even more drama (prime example being all those hashtags).

What I've found interesting is that most of the recent bans I have seen weren't from the blogs or quizzes they make, but the attitude they have in the comments section. Their behavior is really quite unreasonable, but it is very important to learn from mistakes instead of making the same ones over and over again, or you aren't going to get anywhere in life. I'll admit, I have done very stupid things in the comments section (Stewart can confirm), especially in the blogging section, but I have learned from my mistakes, and it helped me grow into a better person, for myself and for the community on JetPunk.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be banned. I try very hard to be a decent person on JetPunk, but sometimes it is hard to keep myself from saying something rash, especially when a argument involving you stirs itself up. What I am trying to say is that it is mostly arguments in the comments that will get people banned, so, and this goes out to everyone, be a nice person, and if you have to say something, at least say it nicely, have netiquette, be a decent person, etc. And if we all try to do that, we should have less banning, and less banning means less of the admins time will be put toward making sure that people aren't being "mean", so to speak. This is just my opinion, thank you for reading my giant block of words.

Afaik you're not gonna get banned for one singular offence of that sort (unless you go as far as doxxing or threatening someone) and most bans were issued for consistent toxicity. People make mistakes and it could be hard to hold yourself back sometimes. Do expect some backlash for impulsive speech though.

Right, that's what I meant, the impulsive speech would probably get you at least shadowbanned for multiple offenses.

I have to say, getting banned has never even crossed my mind. I mean, it makes sense. It's just never crossed my mind. Guess we're having an "aha-moment" now.

I thought most of the discourse here was relatively civil. I feel like you'd have to do something pretty out of line to get banned.

Yeah me too. I guess QM and Stewart do a good job moderating.
