How Fast Can We Go (JetPunk)

Typing Speeds

This is a short blog showing how fast it might be possible to go on JP quizzes.

The current fastest typer is a 212 words per minute but for now, we will go with the record of 216.

Countries of the World Quiz

Type which country was answered in the comments, as well as it's continent

Ok, so the COTW quiz has 253 words and 1,693 characters.

This (all names as they are written in the answer sheet), at 216 words per minute, is 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Surely we can do better!

After applying all the shortcuts I know (we will look into the type-ins later), that is 216 words and 1,425 characters. Bringing us to 4:30. But surely thats not all! Infact.... the COTW quiz record is two minutes and 5 seconds.

Now I am starting to think I went wrong somewhere. Even after removing spaces, I'm still at 1402 characters. In fact, looking at this run, I calculated this guy is typing at 750 words per minute. Something is severely wrong here (15 seconds burst record is 500). After further checking, my word count isn't wrong. I don't think my calculations are.

AHA! I used the words per minute calculations on the characters. Embarrassed at that, lets redo those (at 5 characters per word):

94 seconds at full names without thinking time.

79 seconds at Neo's shortened names without thinking time.

A minute and 19 seconds! And I haven't even gotten to the trick up my sleeve or even looked at all the type ins!

Ok, now using all the type ins, using misspellings, using acronyms, and all (with a few percent margin of error: 213 words and 1357 characters.

75 seconds. We still have not beaten the minute barrier. But amazing nonetheless!

Stenography

A stenograph is a specialized keyboard. It types using syllables, not letters, and you click multiple keys at the same time.

A stenograph layout

The record for stenography is 375 words per minute. However, I'm pretty sure we can only type full words, so our list will need to change.

At our original  253 words words, we are already at 40 seconds! I do think the learning curve for this thing is steep though, and you likely can't type at the record. At the required 225 for a court reporter (they use these), we are still at 67 seconds! Someone get a court reporter JetPunk!

After getting rid of excess words, like "and Tobago", removing one of the Congos, and putting the Central African Republic as Car (since the abbreviation would be typeable), we get 229 words.

36 seconds at record pace stenography without thinking time

61 seconds at court reporting speed without thinking time.

(also apparently its called stenotype for typing, stenography for shorthand.)

If you undertake the two year stenography learning curve, it could be possible for you, yes you, to break the JetPunk record with room to spare!

ALL First Level Subdivisons

How fast could the largest quiz on JetPunk be done?

Wow

I have to point out I took this man nearly three hours to do the quiz (untimed). The quiz has a time limit of 90 minutes and I think it's the largest quiz on the site. Actually there are some larger I think, but this is near the tip.

After what is most definitely in accurate counting and removing two dozen duplicates (like Northern), I think I have a good count.

5065 words and 31726 characters required from 3795 answers.

Time (without thinking time lol)

216

225

14 minutes

Keep in mind, the subdivisions are likely much more complex than a 5 letter word.

To complete this quiz in time, you must type an answer every 1.4 seconds. Perhaps within the end of the century someone will get a stenograph and memory and finish this quiz in time. There are about 1000 answers with 1% by the way!

Happy quizzing!

Is it Cyprus in Asia?

And you can shorten some of the stans. "Kazakhstan" works for example. You can also take the "o" out of Luxembourg and a few others.

Maybe, but probably worth looking into... misspellings could start to add up. If we could have a peek at the regexes (regeces?) for acceptable type-ins and choose the shortest for each, I bet we'd be looking at nontrivial savings!

By some little coding, you can literally do COTW in just 0:00 seconds. I don't know the method but some users like Pandora49(former) and Einstein100102 has done that!

You can actually get a little faster if we assume a typist types all keys equally.

For example, if you type:

BISSAU↑GUINEA

Then the answer box will contain "guineabissau" and you'll get credit for both guinea and guinea bissau (abusing the fact that almost all JetPunk typeins are "starts with" and not "ends with".

Yes and the same could be done as

igeria^n

Though all of these cases, I dont think they could do even a second off the possible time. If there is such a serious runner, we can reevaluate 🙂

Thanks for your comment!

The largest quiz is probally the one where you have to name every city in the world with over 100k people
