The 46: Scene 1

WARNING: There is language (it’s just two words and it’s not bad), but if you’re a language freak feel free not to read

RURAL NORTH CAROLINA

<The camera pans along a long, winding driveway through a field in rural North Carolina. The road leads to a two-story house with a cellar. It’s pouring down rain in the middle of the night>

<The only light on in the house comes from the bottom floor living room. Faint words can be heard from a TV broadcaster>

BROADCASTER: Noah Vellinger up now. Mariners up 2-1 over the Astros. 2 outs, bottom of the 7th. Vellinger’s been hitting pretty good lately…

<The camera moves into the living room, where from the back we see two brothers sitting on a couch, watching baseball on TV. The camera moves to the front. The younger brother, on the right, sits up, running a hand through his black hair—he wears a Duke University shirt. This is Cory Hawk (his Identity isn’t actually revealed until later but for script purposes, I’m telling you his name now). His brother Cody (ditto) lounges, a mop of brown hair on his head, one hand deep in a bowl of popcorn. The room is decorated like a normal house>

CORY (in response to the broadcaster): That’s bullshit. He went 0 for 4 last game

CODY: Yeah, but he had done well the previous games. He hit those two homers against the Jays, remember?

CORY: Fair point but his average is absolute shit

<They watch as Vellinger takes a called third strike>

BROADCASTER: And he takes a called third! That’s the fourth K of the night for Alex Johnson…

CORY: You see what I mean?

<Cody shrugs and shuffles his position, eating a bite of popcorn. He jumps as something sharp presses against his upper thigh>

CODY: Ow! What the hell?

CORY (looking concerned): What’s up?

BROADCASTER: Now up to the plate is Carlos Ramirez. He’s 0 for 2 on the night so far…

<Cody reaches into the back pocket of his jeans and removes a buck knife. He looks at it>

CODY: Oh, it’s just my knife

<Cory watches as he sets It down on the coffee table>

CORY: Oh cool

<They turn back to the TV and watch as Ramirez hits a single>

BROADCASTER: And Ramirez with a drop-in to left, he’ll get on first, bringing up Allen Farial…

<Cory pumps a fist>

CORY: Yes!

<He bumps fists with Cody, who stands up, facing the kitchen. A stuffed mallard duck sits on the mantle. A prized hunting shotgun lies not far away>

CODY: I’m gonna grab a Coke. You want one?

CORY (waving his hand): Naw, I’m good

CODY: Alright

<Cody walks through the living room and around the dining room table Into the kitchen>

BROADCASTER: And Farial will ground out to first, ending the 7th

<Cody hears Cory’s groan and shakes his head, the broadcaster’s voice being drowned out now by the heavy rain>

<He opens the fridge and grabs a Coke. He closes the door and checks the window. He jolts, thinking he’s seen a shadow>

<Cody shakes his head and returns to the couch, popping open the can and taking a swig as a muted commercial plays on the TV>

<From outside, we see the back of Cory’s head through an outside window>

<The game comes back on and Cory unmutes it. Cody reaches down to grab the can again and sees the barest trace of a shadow through the window that disappears in a split second>

CODY (dropping to the floor): Cory, get down!

<Cory drops without a second thought and a bullet smashes through the TV, ripping through the space where Cory’s head just was>

<Bullets start shattering the windows and chaos explodes. The two brothers flip over the polished steel coffee table, Cody snatching his knife from the top. Strapped under the coffee table are two semi-autos, fully loaded and cocked. Cody takes one and tosses one to Cory>

CORY (yelling over the chaos): What the hell are these doing here?!

CODY (flipping the safety off his gun): Just shoot!

<Bullets tear up the bookshelves and the couch and thud into the coffee table. Cody attempts to blind fire but his gun is shot out of his hands. Cory tosses him his>

<Suddenly, the front door is busted down and Cory’s focus sharpens. He grabs the knife from Cody and leaps from the coffee table, spotting a black-clothed assassin as he does>

<Cory locates the family’s prized shotgun on the mantle, still unharmed, and kicks off the top of the table, running along the walls towards the shotgun, deflecting bullets with Cody’s knife, shearing off the blade>

<Cory throws the remains of the knife at the assassin, who spins to avoid It. Cory grabs the shotgun, pumps It once, and blows a hole in the assassin’s chest before he can finish avoiding the knife, which sticks into the wall>

<Cody, seeing this, fires at a shooter at the kitchen window, backing him off for the moment>

<The kitchen window shooter soon comes back and starts firing more along with another assassin positioned at the living room window. Cory takes this in and nabs a book and spins behind a bookshelf, using the book to cover his exposed knees>

<Bullets shred the book and Cory hears footsteps on the roof. Cody hears them too and switches from firing towards the window to blind firing through the second floor up to the roof>

<Cory tosses the book away and flips out of the bookshelf hiding spot, arcing his body to avoid a spray of bullets. He lands, crouches, and leaps out the living room window, shattering the remaining glass, killing the assassin there with a shotgun blast as he rams into him. Cory lands on the ground, outside, on top of the body and immediately rolls away from more gunfire, throwing away the shotgun and snatching the dead assassin’s semi-auto>

<Cory raises the gun and adjusts his aim through the pouring rain within a second, killing a third assassin hidden in the dark lawn>

<Another assassin roaming the perimeter hears the shots and fires at Cory. Cory darts away and throws his semi-auto in the direction of the gunfire, hearing a grunt as the throw find its target. The assassin goes down and Cory sprints to a black sedan semi-visible in the darkness>

<The assassin firing through the kitchen window unclips a grenade and lobs it in, forcing Cody to huddle against the back of the coffee table. The blast slams him Into the opposite wall, where he is covered by the rubble>

<Cory searches the sedan’s glove center console and finds a knife. He leaps onto the top of the sedan and throws the knife into the assassin he knocked down, sticking It through his throat—the assassin dies instantly>

<A second later, he slides off the sedan as shots tear holes in the roof where he just was. The gunshots follow him as he races behind the sedan to catch his breath—he hears the grenade’s explosion>

<Cory rips off the sedan’s license plate and throws it at the assassin on the roof as a distraction, allowing Cory to sprint over amidst heavy fire and tackle the kitchen window assassin. They engage in a furious brawl, trading punches and kicks. Cory snags a knife from the assassin’s ankle guard and stabs him in the leg, dropping him>

<Before he falls, the assassin grabs Cory and takes him down with him, putting him in a chokehold. Cory finds his legs and throws himself backwards into the side of the house, breaking the hold. He pilfers small pistol from the assassin and pops the assassin with a bullet up through the neck, killing him instantly>

<The release allows the rooftop assassin to pinpoint Cory’s location and he leans over, firing right at Cory. Cory uses the dead assassin’s body to shield himself from the shots and then pops out, quickly scaling the side wall and leaping on the top of the roof, where he shoots the assassin through his visor and In the right eye, putting him down. The body drops and slides off they wet roof and lands with a thud on the wet grass>

<Cory descends from the roof as high-beam lights suddenly illuminate the area as well as Cory, standing still in the rain, not even a drop of sweat broken. He slowly walks forward but then stops again. He stands, shocked at what he’s done, in the rain, and stares at the gun In his right hand>

<The house looks like a war zone, the bottom floor blown to pieces, nearly everything either dented or destroyed or covered In bullet holes. The lights in an upstairs bedroom are on. Blood stains dot the welcome mat and the living room floor. The rain doesn’t let up>

<Cory is still standing there in the rain when Cody rushes out of the front entrance, gun in hand. He starts scanning the surroundings but stops when he sees Cory. He lowers his gun>

CODY: Cory?

<Cory doesn’t answer, just keeps staring at the gun>

CODY: You got them all?

<Cory nods and drops the gun, which falls almost noiselessly to the ground. Cory looks at the blood on his hands>

<Cody looks excited>

CODY (joyfully): I knew it! I knew you were one of us

<He starts to do a celebratory dance, tossing his gun aside. Cory opens his mouth>

CORY: What…what did I…

<He draws a shuddering breath and looks at both his hands before looking up at his brother>

CORY: What did I just do?

<Cody stops dancing as their parents, Chris and Kathereen Hawk, appear together in the doorway. Cody’s smile dims but doesn’t vanish upon seeing his brother’s mood>

CODY: You…

<Cory interrupts him. He’s dropped his eyes to his hands again>

CORY: I killed six people. I…I did it w-without breaking a sweat

<He once again looks at his family>

CORY (scared at himself): What am I?

<Cody takes a step forward. Chris and Kathereen wear grim expressions. The rain continues to pour>

CODY (now in a mournful voice, his smile gone): Come inside…

<Cory starts to move forward. Cody moves too and wraps an arm around Cory, helping to lead him towards they remains of the front entrance>

CODY (in a soft voice): We’ll tell you everything
