According to Wikipedia, the most up-to-date name is "Republic of the Union of Myanmar", which was changed from the "Union of Myanmar". Naypyidaw has always been its capital since November 6, 2005. Also according to Wikipedia, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka moved its capital from Colombo to Sri Jayewardenepura-Kotte on April 29, 1982. Hopefully that cleared everything up for everyone as it did for me. Although, the name should be changed from Burma to Myanmar.

Apr 14, 2018
It's not true that Burma and Myanmar are pronounced the same. I've been there in 2014 and many natives prefer the name of Myanmar (and pronounce it just the way we do), because the Burmese are only one of the tribes/people that live in Myanmar.

Yerevan and Ankara are in Asia, so Armenia and Turkey are out. Baku IS actually in Europe, so Azerbaijan should be in the Europe capitals quiz (since these quizzes are about capitals, not about the country itself). As for Cyprus, it is an island, so we measure by the closest landmass, which is Turkey. Since we already decided that Turkey is in Asia, Cyprus is in Asia too.

Jerusalem has always been the official capital of Israel, but most other countries recognize Tel Aviv as the capital and have embassies there because they don't want to upset Muslims. This has particularly been true since 1967 when Israel annexed East Jerusalem, which had previously been annexed by Jordan.

Azerbaijan and Georgia are transcontinental, that means they have area on two continents: Europe and Asia. They still have more area and population in Asia so they're considered Asian countries. The same goes for Turkey. Cyprus and Armenia don't have any territory in Europe, geographically they're completely in Asia. They're just in the same economic region as Europe along with Azerbaijan and Georgia. I'd call it Burma, not Myanmar because the language and script the language uses. The people are called Burmese. Myanmar is just what the military government that wants you to call it.

Okay, I have a question. I have seen the capital of Oman (Mascat) spelt three different ways. I've seen it spelt Muscat, Mascat, and Masqat. I know all of these but my scores sit around in the area where those who score under 100 on IQ tests are roped off (it's such fun in this section--we discuss whether the moon is a sun or a planet like the hosts on QVC, and what about Pluto?...how scientists fooled us unto believing global warming was real when it was really cold last night...all sorts of fun topics are reserved for us in the brain dead section).... simply because I cannot type faster. My right hand is a mess from carpal tunnel anyway..too numb to type. No one knows I can't type, unless I come here to play the speed typing tests disguised as Name the Countries and Name the Capitals--and they just make me feel dumb--no one else is looking. Jetpunk says Asia. But the boundaries between Africa/Europe/Asia are effectively a social construct anyway. Turkey has more in common with Greece geographically than it does with Japan, Sri Lanka or Singapore. And Egypt has more in common with Jordan than it does with Madagascar. We have to put the boundaries somewhere and in cases like Cyprus, Georgia or Russia there are going to be complaints either way.

The delineation between Asia and Europe is fuzzy at best. For JetPunk purposes, Cyprus and Turkey are in Asia and Russia is in Europe. There are quizzes that mention that Istanbul straddles both continents and that Siberia is Asian, but in general some arbitrary decisions need to be made for consistency, especially for continental vaguenesses. Heck, there are all sorts of debates over just the number and names of continents.
