Everyone's heard of Barstow. It's in movies. There's a song about it. I was CONVINCED it would be on here. I look it up there's only 23,000 people. Amazing how some cities make a name for themselves and yield little, while others grow to 1-200,000+ in silence and obscurity.

Nope. That first sentence is false.

It's a literary reference: "We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive....' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas."

Opening lines of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. RIP Hunter S. Thompson (amazing that he lasted as long as he did).

That's how i felt about Biloxi. Not because of pop culture, but because it's a tourist destination for gamblers. Like a redneck vegas. Only 40,000 people there.

Bremerton Washington is also a suburb of Seattle. Kept trying and it wouldn't take. It is directly across Puget Sound, there is a standard commuter ferry.
+4
Level 60

Bremerton is also tiny - less than 38,000 people. Bellevue is 6x as large.

Bremerton is also not really a suburb. It grew up around the naval base on the Kitsap peninsula. Bremerton is easily accessible to Seattle, but I wouldn't call it a suburb, strictly speaking. While people commute from there to Seattle, the presence of the Navy on Kitsap provides it's own economy/community/citys

You should add 2 more cities to the list because those two cities would be

Bloomington, Indiana (82,575) Where IU is

Bloomington, Illinois (78,902)

3 Bloomingtons in a row! XD

Really surprised that the home of IU isn't at least a 100k. Most towns with a major research university have that many now even if they aren't close to a major city.

+2
Level 70
Jul 6, 2019
Hippies in California today, I associate with Humboldt County. Berkeley I associate with very smart, very liberal college kids, but not hippies per se. Granola country - Northern California, parts of Oregon, and Colorado - is where I would put hippies on the map. AKA where there's a strong market for Subaru Outbacks, Nag Champa, super serious disc golfers, or "athletic" sandals.
