I reset this quiz to use difference in rank rather than difference in the the HDI number, which I think yields better results.

Not sure what it was like before but every entry here makes sense and is pretty easy to guess. Thinking of the non-contiguous bits of some European countries is perhaps the only really tricky part.

Lots of unexpected results for me here. I was expecting North/South Korea and Haiti/Dominican Republic to be near the top. It was eye-opening that Oman is so high -- it's actually classified as "high human development". In my mind, I've always just lumped Oman and Yemen together as being similar poorly developed countries. Shows my ignorance.

Oman is quite well off. Many south east asians go there for work, like UAE

Well it's possible that the rankings may have shifted in the two years since he left that comment.
+1
Level 62
Feb 27, 2020
It's not possible. See, the correct rank differences for those countries are: Russia and Norway (48, not 145), Russia and Finland (37, not 91), Moldova and Romania (55, not 103), Ukraine and Poland (56, not 112), Ukraine and Slovakia (52, not 102), Ukraine and Hungary (45, not 93), Guyana and Brazil (44, not 116), Bolivia and Brazil (35, not 80), Brazil and France (53, not 143), Suriname and France (72, not 172), Zimbabwe and South Africa (37, not 150).

I said the last two years not the current year.

But looking at how the countries that did shift in ranks were in low numbers (to elaborate, moving up and down by only a few spaces), yeah, maybe it wasn't possible.

A lot of Gulf state countries have their value permanently pegged to the US dollar because that's what they price barrels of oil in. They just put the decimal in different places. That's why several of them are worth 10x or 100x what their neighbor's currency is.
