"England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.[6][7][8] It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain (which lies in the North Atlantic) in its centre and south, and includes over 100 smaller named islands such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight." -Wikipedia article for England

I had to look this up but apparently the last time a sovereign state named England existed was either 1603 or 1707 when the Kingdom of England officially merged with the Kingdom of Scotland and became the Kingdom of Great Britain.
+1
Level 66
Nov 8, 2019
To be more accurate, the Kingdom of England (which included Wales at the time) merged with the Kingdom of Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. Great Britain and Ireland then joined in 1801 to from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Five-fifths of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922 which left the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Eire ??? And I disagree about England not being a sovereign nation. The Queen is the sovereign ruler of England etc. and whilst it forms part of the United Kingdom, it is a sovereign nation within that kingdom.

Level 59
Jun 29, 2018
If England is a sovereign country then where is its government? To be sovereign it would need to have political authority, and there is no English government, only a UK one. The queen is kind of irrelevant as she has no real power and is also the queen of other sovereign countries.
