I remember typing in "the diabeetus" on one quiz on this site and it worked. But not this one.

Actually derriere is French. I also kept thinking of the word "Dame" instead of dowager. I had no idea what dowager meant. I remember reading it somewhere, but I didn't bother to look it up.

I've always known it as Jinn - it's a bit tricky when alternative spellings have different first letters :(

The Duma is not the Russian parliament. The Russian parliament is the Federal Assembly. It is comprised of the State Duma, the lower house, and the Federation Council, the upper house. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Russia#Parliament So, Duma would be incorrect on two counts as it is the State Duma and not just Duma.

The clue should probably be more specific. I was trying to think of a word for horse races in general, not a specific place at which races take place.

It isn't a specific place at which races take place, it's a word for race hence Epsom Derby, Kentucky Derby etc etc

Is it being high-profile that turns a singer into a diva? I thought it was being hard to manage.

A diva isn't necessarily a singer.. right?

Formerly a diva was a female opera singer. Now it can mean a famous woman who sings pop music, or any temperamental woman. https://www.google.com/search?q=define+diva&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Childbirth assistant - Dad should work, but I get it's a stretch. Doctor surely isn't...

Read it as a fancy way of saying "but" (one "t")... tried "despite" and a few others and finally read it right. Sigh. It's like my teachers always said, "be sure to read the question!"

I do a lot of crosswords and have never seen "doula". Which is odd given it's 5 letters long with them of them being vowels. In fact, in the modern era of the New York Times Crossword (since 1993: >9000 puzzles and >500K clues), it's been used exactly once.
