Worked my way around the coast, even remembered to pick up Malta, but then couldn't think what would be between Norway's and Latvia's capitals...

It was coastal, but then the sea was turned into a lake so it doesn't count anymore.

In the 1930's they first built a dike that split the Waddenzee (part of the North Sea) and the Ijselmeer. Then a second dike in the 1970's that split the Ijselmeer and the Markermeer which borders Amsterdam.

The quiz doesn't ask for capitals of European countries, only for capitals in Europe. So by that logic, Istanbul would qualify. If it was a capital, of course.

Turkey's capital is now Ankara in the smack dam in the Turkish mainland, Istanbul is in the European area. And is an old capital

Worth noting that Baku isn't that ridiculous. Some people consider the Caucasus to be comprised of European countries because it is partly in Europe.

I mean, even if it wasn't counted as Asia but Europe, Nicosia is still further away from the sea than 10 km.

(I know this was a joke, just wanted to share that though.)

Hm. I tried London too, but the Thames, while a tidal river as far as the centre of the city, is clearly not a bay, a gulf, or an inlet.

Monte Carlo is the largest quartier of Monaco, but Monaco is a City State, like Singapore or Vatican. To say Monte Carlo is the capital of Monaco is akin to Manhattan being the capital of NYC or Sandton the capital of Johannesburg. It's just not the case.
+2
Level 60
May 27, 2022
I agree, but I think it's a better comparison to say Monte Carlo is the capital of Monaco is akin to Manhattan being the capital instead of NYC (if it was a capital) or Sandton being the capital of instead of Johannesburg as they're referring to Monaco as the country not as the city presumably.

May 28, 2022
This quiz requires the city center to be less than 10km from the sea. While the city of Rome is actually on the coast, its city center is more than 10km far from the seaside, so it does not qualify.

I am sure this picture is not the best choice to represent a capital of a lutheran, not orthodox nation. Being represented by an alien church is actually quite insulting.
+1
Level 58

Orthodox Christianity is by far the biggest religion in Estonia by number of adherents. Fewer than 10% of the population describe themselves as Lutheran.
+2
Level 55
Nov 30, 2023
Hardly anyone knows the situation better than locals. Maybe this is not very easy to understand.

The fact is that this is a Russian church and estonians do not go there.

This church, belonging to Patriarchy of Moscow, was completed only in 1900 during the time of russification. Many see that building as a symbol of oppression.

There also exists Estonian Orthodox church which is under the Patriarchy of Constantinople.

Even if estonians are one the least religious nations, lutheranism is still by far the most followed religion among them.
