The colour saffron is a type of intense yellow. And the actual physical spice ranges from dark red to yellowy orange. Quizmaster, please change the clue to be less confusing -- orange would probably be a good compromise. With red I ran out of guesses after cayenne, paprika etc.
Just mix the the two answers to start a new answer? Q: What color is the U.S. flag? A: "Quizmaster, you should accept light purple as a compromise answer."
I'm color blind, so I don't know if it's red, yellow, or purple, but I can't imagine that anyone who knows what paella, practically the national dish of Spain, is wouldn't know that it has saffron in it. You don't have to be Julia Child, just go to a Spanish cafe sometime. Although to be fair Turmeric is often substituted for saffron because it is soooo much less expensive.
Lol. It looks like the disagreement is old. From the Wikipedia entry for azafrán:
.... Por su alto valor económico se ha denominado oro rojo ...
....Due to it's high economic value it has been called red gold ...
... Las mayoría de las fuentes concuerdan en que [la palabra] proviene de la palabra árabe az-za'fran o zaʽfarān (cuyo origen se desconoce) que significa amarillo ...
....Most sources agree that [the word] comes from the Arabic word az-za'fran or zaʽfarān (whose origin is unknown) which means yellow ...
it is definitely not espana, which is accepted... it needs the special ñ (which I can't get on this keyboard, but copied it for the purpose of this comment). Using gn is a better way to describe/replace the letter than using a normal n. Another (also not accepted) option would be espania, again not the word used in spain but closer than espana which would be something like es pah nah or something
Bloody hell, I know sod all about Spain, as a Brit I thought it was just one massive all-inclusive resort serving round the clock fry-ups. (that is a joke btw) :D
"The above," in this instance, means "previously mentioned". According to WordReference, its translation in Spanish would be arriba. You'll see it a lot in business emails. Similarly, its cousin "the below" is a reference to something that will soon follow or come later in text.
no, it was our currency until 2001 or so. i was like 4 but i remember a little bit! even today my parents and old people still think "in pesetas" and sometimes i need them to translate hahaha
That's not what claprei meant. They were saying that their guesses—pesos, dollars, and reales—were too far back to be answers, not that pesetas were too far back.
Since Portugal is an answer, the question about the Iberian peninsula should probably be worded to avoid using it. "Peninsula on which mainland Spain is located" works just fine.
Although they are far more widely-known for their cool hats, I think their conquering is probably general enough knowledge that this clue should be adequately descriptive for the average jetpunker.
I rarely ever ask this, but could you be more flexible on the spelling for Pyrenees? I thought it had either double R or double N. On the other hand I rarely ask because I prefer knowing the correct spelling, so I could just kick myself instead.
I am from Gibraltar and currently live in Gibraltar, so I just wanted to say to all the spaniards that Gibraltar ISN'T spanish and all of the 32,000 other Gibraltarians agree.
Me, an Spanish, I agree Gibraltar is UK because we gived it for friendship gift, and Gibraltar makes the union of British and Spanish friendship as I said.
I thought this was finally going to be the day I remembered the city for the running of the bulls and confidently typed in Palermo. So close and yet so far

We would have been better left alone.
PD. Spain you should give our gold back.
You cannot do a quiz on spain without mentioning Galicia or the Basque Country
