You forgot Texas! I say the Republic of Texas sounds like a fine idea -- as long as we have enough border agents to turn back illegal aliens -- like Cowboys fans or anyone with the last name of Bush -- back at the border!
What about Sam Houston, Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie, Daniel Boone, Steve Austin and all those other foreign immigrant troublemakers? You're right, give Texico back.
Parties supporting Flemish indepence have never reached 50% of the electorate, so no, there certainly is not a separatist majority. At the last election these parties managed to secure just under 40% of the vote, of which 32.5% can be attributed to the NVA. The latter party did, however, not even run on a separatist agenda, but rather focused on right wing socio-economic reforms. Although many in Flanders do support further devolution, every opinion poll to date shows a very large majority to remain as a part of Belgium.
The results of the last elections in Catalonia had 48% of the votes for secessionist parties, 31% for unionist parties, and 11% for a party that still has not positioned on the matter (but that has both pro independence and anti independence members)
Belgium is the only country with a separatist movement where the majority wants to leave a minority. But within the Flemish community, there's no majority for independence. Most Flemish nationalist parties want to "evolve" towards a confederal system. And even if there was a political majority within Flanders, negotiating will be intense, probably worse than Brexit... Who will pay for the government's debt, what to do with Brussels, with villages in the middle of the linguistic border, mixed language families, etc. Good luck trying to settle those things when we can't even find an agreement to form a government...
I'm not sure Tibet exactly counts as a separatist movement. That's like saying that after Iraq invaded Kuwait (first Gulf War), Kuwait launched a "separatist movement". No, they just wanted the invaders the hell out.
Nice sentiment, samiaco, but the difference is that Kuwait was under Iraqi control for a few weeks before we kicked them out whereas Tibet still suffers under the dictatorial Chinese communist yoke over 60 years on. When an unelected dictatorship seeks to prevent it's citizens from leaving the country (in addition to the other atrocities mentioned above and many others), you can tell that there's something seriously wrong. As there was with the Soviet Union. May I recommend you read "Escape from Tibet" by Nick Gray? That gives an horrific picture of the brutality of the Chinese regime.
^ no problem - there's nothing wrong with not knowing something or asking a question. Even if it does elicit a sarcastic response sometimes (I know I can be guilty of that).
I'm kinda skeptical about Chuuk. They've postponed it many times and while it should happen next month, there is still no exact date or lots of information
Of the votes in the Bougainville-PNG independence turnout, 97.7% of people voted for independence. So, they will officially become independent in 2027.
I can see three of these happening in the next half a decade. Two are sort of okay-ed already and one receiving a whole lot of, as they choose to call it, strong silent support (from govt level).
You could easily do a part two for this quiz! Somaliland is another pretty big separatist movement, and you could do South Ossetia, Azawad (I heard it was kinda relevant in Mali), Zanzibar, Hawaii even. There are a lot of possible options to choose from honestly, especially since lots of people in the comments are mentioning more.
Missed the last 3 but I was sooooo close on the last one. >_< I even guessed Georgia and Armenia immediately before time ran out.
I'll always remember Transnistria as the one place in the world I tried to drive my car through that would not accept my paperwork (upon entering; Serbia accepted it upon entering and then decided to not accept it when exiting as a pretext to steal it). I had to drive around the "country" on my way to Ukraine. Added about 20 minutes to my trip time.
Upper Silesia? I am from Poland and, yes, there is some organisation that wants independence, but it's marginal. I may as well want the independence of my fridge, and I will have exactly the same influence as they.
There is more popularity towards autonomy among them, but it's still absolutely marginal and has 0 chance of happening.
Totally agree. I live in the middle of Upper Silesia and separatist movements are really minor. When it comes to autonomists, they were even in regional asembly, that's the other way around. Puting here Upper Silesia is a huge exaguration.
Tamil Nadu doesn't really fit in here, unless you have very loose definition of 'Separatist Movement' but even then there's a lot more places that should make it on this list before Tamil Nadu.
It would be more accurate to put Jammu & Kashmir for India+Pakistan.
If there is a separatists movement in Puerto Rico, let them go. Currently, they are getting all of the benefits of being a US territory. What do we really get out of that deal?
The only suggestion I can find that there's any kind of separatist movement in the Torres Strait is one advocating for the area to split from Queensland and become a federal territory like Christmas Island, not one advocating for full independence; and it's a couple of news articles that are eight years old, at that.
As addressed by many here, including those in the state like myself, I do not feel like Tamil Nadu has, at any point in its history, had a major seperatist movement. Also, the states/UTs of Punjab, Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, etc. do not have an "active" seperatist movement either. I hope these concerns get addressed
Texan by (self designed) image, in reality not so much.
South Sudan's independence is separate from the Darfur conflict.
