Interesting, the cluing could seem to describe the representatives of Jehovah's Witnesses or Latter-day Saints/Mormons equally well. I wonder why JWs draw more vitriol?

Because the Jehovahs Witnesses are much more insistent, have those creepy comic books, and demand that their followers cut all ties with people outside the faith, including family members. Most people have at least one acquaintance whose mother or son disowned them and fell off the face of the earth.

Jehovah's Witnesses are professing Christians. Learn the difference between those and real Christians and you'll be a better debater.

Kal, Jesus most certainly did not demand his followers to cut all ties with people outside the faith. On the contrary, he not only spent loads of time with the outcasts of society (Jewish leaders of the time would never have done this), he also connects God's covenant with Israel to ALL people, Jews and Gentiles alike. So he is the very model of inclusion. All are welcome. (If you happen to be referring to Luke 14, he's simply stating that people need to prioritize their relationships so that God is first, which is not the same as saying to cut off all contact with non-believers.)

Even though I believe there are a lot more Mormons than JWs in the world, I think people have the impression that far more JWs show up knocking on our doors than Mormons ever do. I suspect that's because Mormon missionaries do more than door-knocking; they do helpful things like work with Habitat for Humanity and such. I can certainly count the number of times there've been Mormons at my door, but the JWs come every. single. weekend.

unquestionably is a bit of a stretch, as indicated by only 70% guessing it, on Jar Jar Binks. I have never particularly despised him, annoyed perhaps, but there are far more characters that I actively hate rather than an ambivalent about. Darth Vader was my first guess; sure he had an empathetic moment when he revealed himself to Luke, but he did blow up a planet. Palpatine, Jabba, and Count Dooku also made my list ahead of Jar Jar.

think it's more about which character you hate enough to get rid of. Most things on this list are just expendable, rather than evil. Not anchovies, though. Anchovies are awesome

Technically, Grand Moff Tarkin was the guy who ordered planetary destruction. Vader was there, but not in charge, so...not the guy who destroyed planets.

I think the percentage might also have to do with the number of people who got it wrong because we actually have no clue who are the characters of Star Wars. For those of us who don't watch the movies, we might assume it's Darth Vader, however, he's also a favored villain so not really hated.

"Hated" sent me to the evil characters as well, not the buffoon. Tarkin, Vader, Palpatine, Dooku... Maybe the question needs rephrasing.

PETA's intentions aren't really good at all. Not to get too political, but they kill more animals than they save, and they're actually against pet ownership. That's not some crazy accusation, it's right on their own website: http://www.peta.org/about-peta/why-peta/pets/

Really? I mean, I've always heard mixed things about them in general, and never really known the truth of the matter. Could you elaborate on your first statement? I'm honestly curious, and that's really unfortunate if what you said is the case.
+2
level 42
May 20, 2015
I don't like PETA but the 'they kill more animals than they save' statement annoys me. They rescue severely damaged animals, often dying with no way to save them. If the dog is just stray it goes to a shelter, not to PETA. Who is going to adopt a dog with an infected bite wound? Kids want healthy puppies that look cute, not dying dogs with horrible diseases and wounds. Euthanasia is a better thing for a dog suffering from something like that than just pointlessly keeping it alive in pain for a couple of weeks until it dies of natural causes.
+1
level 80
May 17, 2019
PETA seems to me to be one of those organizations that was founded out of good intentions to combat a particular problem, but only later realized that there are reasons why things like animal abuse are pretty intractable. They then go on to actually make things worse (in some ways, at least) by being overly strident about their cause and vilifying broad swaths of people who also have good intentions but disagree with PETA's approach. Like most groups of their ilk, they do some good, but have unfortunately become a lightning rod for criticism because they can be so over the top.

Same here. I bought a laptop that already had it installed vs. trying to convert from XP, which seemed to be some of the problem for people. I've never had a problem or found it difficult to us. I've disliked Windows 8 much more than Vista.
+1

May 17, 2015
Totally agree. Vista was a great operating system. The people who complained about it were mostly hackers and computer nerds. Windows 7 was even better. Windows 8, on the other hand, was a travesty. 8.1 running Classic Shell is almost acceptable but it's still dumb that we have to download an app just to get Windows to run like an actual computer OS and not the OS of a smart phone or tablet.

But Vista was fine.

+1
level 63

I'm gonna have to assume that you have NEVER and I mean NEVER attempted to transfer any files in any way on Vista, if you've never had a problem. Vista launched with the system getting confused about how long it was going to take to move a bunch of files from folder A to folder B, or for more funsies, from folder A, to flash drive B.. It would sit and calculate, the little spiffy bar would do the glowy thing, like it was doing stuff, while it told you "10 minutes remaining", for 20 damn minutes. Seriously, ALL the time. Microsoft did release a patch for that in an update, (because it was actually an issue) but that never did work correctly. I like Windows 7, and I can tolerate 8.1. I see what they're trying to do making the OS the same across the board, but damn it, a 'touch friendly interface' is terrible for a PC. I luckily only got a machine with 8.1 and not just 8. That would have sucked.

He wasn't fired. As a matter of fact, they made quite a big deal of it on Grand Tour, introducing the other two by who had fired them and stating rather pointedly that Jeremy Clarkson has never been fired. Rather, his contract went unrenewed, whereupon his coworkers quit and started Grand Tour.

I have to question Jeremy Clarkson's inclusion on this quiz. He's not "famous for being disliked": he's famous for sharply dividing opinion. To me, "famous for being disliked" implies that the popular attitude towards him should be unipolar - but that just isn't the case.

There are people who like achovies. Lance Armstrong still has a few fans. There are lots of hipsters out there who are not self-loathing. If Crocs weren't so popular nobody would hate them. Duke's got plenty of fans. Republicans love Monsanto and Goldman Sachs. It doesn't say anywhere that these things are hated by unanimous vote.

Monsanto is infamous in Europe, first they were the boogey-monster that made people fight the US/EU free-trade agreement (later scrapped by Trump) in great numbers; then they were bought by Germany's Bayer. Bayer is now in dire straits because of the RoundUp/Cancer/Kill-the-bees troubles that Monsanto brought them.

Interesting contrast between characters who were clearly designed to be hated (Joffrey, Commodus, probably Janice (although honestly she's a better person than the main characters a lot of the time)) and characters that the creators presumably wanted us to like, or at least tolerate (Jar-Jar, Skyler).
