Umami? I remember reading about this when they first discovered it.. in that article they just called it the "savory" taste. They said it was the secret for why so much msg in Chinese food made it taste good. wtf is Umami? Sweet, Sour, Salty, Savory... sounds a lot better than Sweet, sour, salty, umami...
I think savory is basically the English translation of umami. Research is ongoing about taste, and they are discussing adding a sixth taste and perhaps others. See this article, http://www.livescience.com/17684-sixth-basic-taste.html. Possible others include calcium, metal, piquancy (heat), menthol (coolness), kokumi (richness, as in slow-cooked meats), fat, and carbon dioxide (champagne bubbles or soda fizz).
Heh, you're dating yourself, Susie222! Did you also learn that different "zones" of the tongue tasted each of the different flavors? Yeah, turned out that was a whole big load of hogwash, too.
Untouchable in the Indian sense is not given to street children. Caste is no longer used as such in India nowadays, but when the term 'Untouchable' was used it was to a whole strata of people, not street children.
It always amazes (and disgusts me at the same time) how some people have the unmitigated gall to request a different spelling of
a word just to accommodate their inability/unwillingness to spell
that word. It doesn't matter to them that doing so would only
confuse those of us who do make an effort to learn to spell as
well as to cheapen the quality of the quiz.
vermiciousknid, I have lived in various states in the eastern U.S., from north to south. I can't recall where I have picked up this particular word. Possibly, I just haven't heard "upchuck" used frequently. There must be dozens of euphemisms for vomit used from place to place.
Anyone else try ugh for vomit? Later I tried upthrow.. and got ululate in the end. I tried ululare first then extra l's before getting ut right. I didnt get the bear right though, tried more than 20 things. Ursus ursic ursa urso, ursine, I dont know (maybe not the exact above but many different spellings)
