Largest Terrestrial Animal by Country (with Map)

Guess the largest (heaviest) land animal found in each country.
Doesn't include introduced animals except for those that have been reintroduced. Also excludes animals without a settled population in the country, domestic animals and humans.
Based on the maximum recorded weight for each species or subspecies in the wild.
There may be larger animals in some of the countries, but there is a lack of information about them. Some countries are left out due to a lack of information about the native fauna there.
Only includes animals that spend the majority of time on land, so animals such as crocodilians, flying birds (and penguins), amphibians and bats are excluded. Arboreal animals have been included, however.

Thanks. I guess that there aren't that many particularly large terrestrial animals in Central and South America.

Are tapirs bigger than llamas, capybara, jaguars, alpacas, and anacondas? Does the last not count as terrestrial because they swim a lot?

Same for crocodiles in Australia?

Crocodilians are explicitly excluded in the instructions.

Fab quiz, gets ya thinkin'. I had an inspired desperate guess at "tapir"!

46% of people have heard of the "Tian Shan wapiti"?

+2
Level 79

Thanks. There are several type-ins for the Tian Shan wapiti, so they may have got it with one of those.

and what about humans?
+4
Level 79

Tapirs are bigger than those animals mentioned (maximum weights: 91 kg for capybara, 97.5 kg for anaconda, 158 kg for jaguar, 200 kg for llama and 84 kg for alpaca), and besides which llamas and alpacas are domesticated so they don't count. I did leave crocodiles out due to the fact that they spend a lot of time in the water, and I left out humans as they aren't really a native species in most countries.

In Philippines, water buffalo is slightly larger than the tamaraw, based on Google, water buffalos can weigh from 300 to 550 kg, while tamaraws can only weigh 240 kg, also, water buffalos and tamaraws aren't the same species

I had a look online, and it says the only water buffalo in the Philippines is the carabao. The Wikipedia page says that it is a domestic animal, which based on the caveats I've used means it doesn't fit this quiz.

Typed red kangaroo but it wasn't accepted, then it appears to be the required answer for Australia? Something strange going on with that answer.
+3
Level 83
Aug 27, 2022
Me too. Tried both kangaroo and red kangaroo (and great grey kangaroo although that’s not the right answer). Definitely a problem here.
+3
Level 62

I believe a problem with the type-in has caused the main answer to be not accepted.

Can't believe a pygmy shrew is the biggest one in the Comoros!

Yeah, it was a type-in problem. Thanks for letting me know.

Suggest that the quiz should be named "heaviest" land animal rather than "largest", as you appear to have used weight rather than height or length.

Small criticism - why isn't it moose for Sweden. I've definitely seen those there lol
+2
Level 79
Aug 28, 2022
I've based each answer on the heaviest weight for each subspecies, or if I can't find out the specific subspecies that lives in the country, just the species. I've only found one weight measurement for the European elk subspecies of moose, and the maximum weight is 475 kg. I'm not entirely sure whether this is correct or not, so if anyone knows how large European elk can get then if they could let me know.

Why is the camel not the answer for most of the Arabian Peninsula? The camel is several hundred kilograms heavier than the Arabian Oryx, so does this mean that the camel is not native to the peninsula?

The quiz excludes domesticated animals for the moment, and all extant dromedaries are domestic.
