Which City is Older? #1

Jicheng, located in what is now Beijing, was a walled city built in 1045 BC. Shanghai was founded as a fishing village that developed between the 5th and 7th centuries.

A fort was built by the Dutch on Manhattan Island in 1623, and New Amsterdam was founded in 1624. Georgetown, now a neighbourhood of Washington D.C., was founded in 1751.

A religious community was established in the area of modern Glasgow in c. 550, while Liverpool was founded in 1207 by King John.

Tangier was founded as a Phoenician colony sometime between the 10th and 8th century BC, and was developed into an important port by the Carthaginians in the 5th century BC. Fez was founded in 789 by Idris I, Emir of Morocco.

Prehistoric sites dating back to c. 6000-4000 BC can be found within Bornova, a metropolitan district of İzmir. The oldest settlements located in what is now Ankara were built by the Hittites, who existed from c. 1600 BC to c. 1178 BC.

São Paulo was founded as the village of São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga on 25th January 1554. French colonists settled on Villegagnon Island, part of modern Rio de Janeiro, in 1555, while the Portuguese founded São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on 1st March 1565, from which the city of Rio de Janeiro developed.

Nizhny Novgorod has its origins in a hillfort founded by Grand Duke Yuri II in 1221. The first settlement in modern Saint Petersburg was the fortress Nyenschantz, built by Swedish colonists in 1611.

Samarkand was founded in the 8th or 7th century BC, while Tashkent was settled somewhere between the 5th to 3rd centuries BC.

Sydney was founded as a penal colony in 1788, while Melbourne was founded as a town in 1835.

The Iroquois established two villages, Ganatsekwyagon and Teiaiagon, within the area of modern Toronto in the 1660s. These were later abandoned, and in 1751 the French constructed the trading post Fort Rouillé in the area. Ottawa was founded as Bytown on 26th September 1826.

Although the exact founding date of Mombasa is unknown, it is believed to have been founded in around 900 A.D. and was mentioned in Arab texts in the 12th century, which suggests that it must have been a prosperous trading town by that time. Nairobi was established in 1899 as a railway depot.

A Roman village was built in what is now Florence in 59 BC, and there may have also been an earlier settlement. Venice was founded as a trading post of Padua on 25th March 421 AD.

The first settlement within modern Buenos Aires was established on 2nd February 1536 by the Spanish, yet this settlement was abandoned. A second settlement was established (again by the Spanish) on 11th June 1580, which would later become the city of Buenos Aires. Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, was established by British missionaries during the latter half of the 19th century.

Yangon was founded as Dagon in c. 1028–1043 by the Mon people, while Mandalay was founded on 13th February 1857 by King Mindon as his new royal capital.

Mexico City is built on top of Tenochtitlan, which was founded in 1325. Monterrey is not built on a pre-Columbian site, so the oldest (permanent) settlement within the area of the modern city was founded by the Spanish on 20th September 1596.
