São Paulo was founded as the village of São Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga on 25th January 1554. French colonists settled on Villegagnon Island, part of modern Rio de Janeiro, in 1555, while the Portuguese founded São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro on 1st March 1565, from which the city of Rio de Janeiro developed.

Although the exact founding date of Mombasa is unknown, it is believed to have been founded in around 900 A.D. and was mentioned in Arab texts in the 12th century, which suggests that it must have been a prosperous trading town by that time. Nairobi was established in 1899 as a railway depot.

The first settlement within modern Buenos Aires was established on 2nd February 1536 by the Spanish, yet this settlement was abandoned. A second settlement was established (again by the Spanish) on 11th June 1580, which would later become the city of Buenos Aires. Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego, was established by British missionaries during the latter half of the 19th century.

Yangon was founded as Dagon in c. 1028–1043 by the Mon people, while Mandalay was founded on 13th February 1857 by King Mindon as his new royal capital.

Mexico City is built on top of Tenochtitlan, which was founded in 1325. Monterrey is not built on a pre-Columbian site, so the oldest (permanent) settlement within the area of the modern city was founded by the Spanish on 20th September 1596.
