1000 Most Famous People (MIT Pantheon)

All data gathered by MIT's Pantheon project. Check their website out AFTER attempting the quiz to avoid spoilers! You can contact me at Espio#1653 on Discord with comments or concerns.

Many European nobles or medieval figures will require both "name" and "of location". Number is not required. Example: "Chad of Sweden" would count for "Chad XI, Prince of Sweden". Holy Roman Emperors should be written as "Chad, Holy Roman Emperor" (again, number not required.).
Some cultures place the surname before the first name. Thus what may appear as their first name will count as the surname, and typing what appears as the last name will not count.
Please leave any concerns over type-ins, common nicknames or alternate spellings, inaccurate information, spelling errors, etc. in the comments or DM me on Discord at Espio#1653.

I don't know how the quiz looks on other screens, but on mine, anything beyond two columns is partially or not at all visible (without annoying sideways scrolling that eats a lot of time).

Yes, I split it up in columns of 100 so you can line up two columns at a time and not have to scroll down much to get to the bottom.

It is 1000 people. You can have more than 500 rows by manually importing your answer data as a spreadsheet.

Wow… this list is not that good, no offense. With all due respect, how is Isaac Newton more famous than Jesus. I’d say this list focuses way to much on arts, seeing how prominent on the list people like Bach and Da Vinci are.

I appreciate it, as you said this list is not mine. No guarantees that the list is going to be good, but I think it's decent enough if you ignore the strict order. It took MANY hours to make!

Lots of problems with this quiz.

When you're going to make people guess 1000 answers, don't make them jump through hoops. Based on "1926--", "United Kingdom", "Nobility", it's obviously Queen Elizabeth II. Okay, so try "Elizabeth". No. "Elizabeth II". No. Are you kidding me? "Queen Elizabeth II". Still no. "Elizabeth II of England". Yes, that was finally specific enough. Obviously, you have to differentiate her from all the other Elizabeth IIs. There was an Elizabeth II of China, wasn't there? Queen Elizabeth II of Mexico?

Likewise, 460 was perfectly obvious based on 1900-2002. But, what to write to get the answer? After several attempts, I finally got it with "Elizabeth the Queen Mother". Of course, she was already known as Queen Elizabeth when she was the wife of King George VI, but let's go with her most recent title to make it more difficult.

An hour isn't really enough time for this quiz. You didn't need to make it harder by making it a guessing game for the answers you know.

After spending several minutes trying to figure out what to write to get Elizabeth II, I decided this quiz was too badly made to continue and just refreshed the page. I won't take this quiz until it's fixed.

I am unsure why it would take you so long to figure out the format for monarch names, given that it is explicitly stated in the quiz description. If it bothers you that much, consider making all 1000 RegEx answers yourself. It seems like you think I have an obligation to put in even more hours of work to "fix" this quiz for you.
+1
Level 45

They never said you were obligated, just that it would make more sense and increase user enjoyment. I agree with them--the naming format is completely unnecessary.

Fix it or don't, but don't get angry with a user for providing feedback.

In the quiz description, I mention that all royalty must be answered with the format "NAME of LOCATION". For example, Elizabeth of England would work. I apologize if I did not make this clear. If you think there is a better universal way to format these names let me know. I cannot go through and check all 1000 so I needed something quick and consistent. I must have missed fixing Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, as I tried to automate the RegEx process. Finally, one hour is the largest amount of time JetPunk allows (or allowed at the time of creation).

Thank you for the feedback!

It's perfectly clear. It doesn't seem consistent though. "Elizabeth England" works for Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, but "Elizabeth UK" and "Elizabeth United Kingdom" don't work. On the other hand "Victoria England" doesn't work for Victoria of the United Kingdom.

It would be good if "England" "UK" and "United Kingdom" all work for these (and others if relevant).

Personally I'd just get rid of the need to specify country and treat it the same as when guessing a surname that gives you other answers as bonuses, but nothing wrong with your format.

Fun quiz overall :)

I surprised by these rankings: How can Washington be so low, behind Proust and Thucydides, Castro the same worth as JFK, how are people like Salazar or Suleiman here?

I don't know if it is only for me, but I feel this is kinda biased and not universal.

I've done something similar to this quiz so I did enjoy it but may I suggest shortening it to the top 100 or 500. Something manageable. In addition, I would have to agree with a previous comment - the first name of monarchs should be enough.

Thank you for the feedback!

I chose to do Top 1000 on purpose, as there are no other quizzes of such a monstrous size. The absurd size of it is the whole point. Additionally, only requiring a first name allows for too many accidental solves. You could just type "John", "George", "Henry" and get like 30 answers for free.

There are loads of bones to pick, but just one example: How is obscure Catalan politician Carles Puigdemont number 131, ahead of Nero, Marcus Aurelius or John Lennon?

Just how?

Actually makes me chucke as it is so absurd.

This MIT list is too biased in favor of liberal arts. Some are ok, but many lesser-known people appearing in this list - young singer/musician, actor, film-maker? Come on, there are many more deserved people to be named here.

The bias to United States is understandable, but virtually no Japanese?

Some mathematicians are named, but from long time ago. No Poisson? No Kolmogorov? They should replace some writers out there.

Good quiz! A few suggestions:

1. Carl von Linne would be nice to have as a type-in for Linnaeus.

2. Accepting other spellings of Genghis Khan's name (Chinggis) might be good, even if most people will just put in "Khan."

3. There might be a reason for this, but for the Elizabeths and other English monarchs you can put "of England" but you have to type "of the United Kingdom" for Victoria.

4. Accept just "Ferdinand of Austria" rather than "Franz Ferdinand of Austria" (unless there's something I'm missing.)

+2

Nice quiz, but some of the type-ins should be easier i.e. "Louis XIV of France" all the words needed to get that filled in. Also, "Mary mother of Jesus."

Should just be Louis, Mary, etc.

The quiz is hard enough without extra work IMHO : )
