Hint
Answer
500 deaths per year -This large semi-aquatic animal is lethal due to extreme aggressive territorial tendencies, including charging boats and over-turning them. Weighing in between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds with very sharp teeth, this animal is not to be trifled with.
Hippopotamus
500 deaths per year - Another large animal that is mostly gentle and very trainable, however, habitat loss has brought this animal into conflict with humans causing disastrous consequences. They have even been known to raid villages and farms in what appear to be coordinated attacks.
Elephant
1,000 deaths per year - This prehistoric looking animal is one of the few on this list that actually sees humans as prey. Weighing in at around 1,000 pounds with a length of 17-23', if this animal pursues you as pray, it will reach speeds of nearly 20 miles per hour. The version of this animal is the one that lives in the ocean.
Saltwater Crocodile
2,500 deaths per year - Transmitted when a person accidentally ingests their eggs, this parasite gets into the body when food or drink is contaminated by human feces. They take up residence in the small intestine and use the human body to stay alive, feed and reproduce. The resulting disease is called Ascariasis, characterized by fever, abdominal pain and swelling, and shortness of breath.
Roundworm
Hint
Answer
2,600 deaths per year - This tiny animal produces venom for the same reason that many species do, not to kill humans, but to subdue or kill their prey. The venom of 25 species of this animal can be deadly to humans. Stings often happen accidentally when stepped on with bare feet, or when they are hiding in people’s shoes.
Scorpion
10,000 deaths per year - This insect spreads disease and death through its bite and is aptly named. Some species of this Central and South American bug are responsible for spreading Chagas disease, another tropical parasitic disease that is lethal to humans. The species that do this are also often called ‘kissing bugs’, as they tend to bite people’s faces as they sleep.
Assassin Bug
138j,000 deaths per year - This venomous snake holds the record as the most deadly snake in terms of mortality. A particularly aggressive species, this snake is more deadly than the world's most venomous snake. Its aggressive nature, paired with its potent venom and presence in highly populated areas, make this a snake to fear.
Saw-Toothed Viper
200,000 deaths per year - This mollusk hosts deadly parasites, in particular parasitic flatworms known as flukes. A particularly nasty one that is transmitted by the freshwater mollusk is called Schistosoma. The flukes live and develop within the animall then are released into the water. Humans get infected from the contaminated freshwater as the flukes penetrate the skin. This is responsible for a deadly human disease called schistosomiasis, also known as ‘this animal-fever’.
