Are you sure about that description of Greeley? It looks like he only ran in 1872 when he was the nominee of the Democratic Party.

He was a candidate for the 'Liberal Republican' party in 1872, and won 43% of the popular vote. He was also the Democratic nominee (He ran as candidate from both parties) but his campaign was centred around the 'Liberal Republican' party
