Find The Mystery City Using Color Clues - Randomized
To start, name any of the top 200 cities by population. The redder it appears, the closer you are. When you guess the mystery city, the quiz is over - you win!
Another update to fix the geographic spread of the possible answers: especially around northeastern China and northeastern USA a lot of answers were grouped together
No way! My first guess was Beijing, and that was the mystery city. :) Also, as I said on the country version, these quizzes are truly amazing. Great job!
I agree they are quite close together. I chose these colours to adhere to Pandora's series, which uses these shades as well. They were chosen so that it is also playable for colorblind users: if you turn it into a rainbow it'll be impossible to tell for colorblind users what is close and what is far
That's right. The 'guessing game' adds to the difficulty of the quiz, and expanding the variety of colors wouldn't really do anything unless if the city is in a very remote area, but that would make it too easy. I personally think it's a little more fun when you have to guess the nearby cities. So, if rainbow colors were to be used, it wouldn't really make much of a difference since 1 of the colors would cover an area relatively close to the mystery city.
It is not the darkest of red but it is still a little dark. This is because it is not distance, it is cities in between Hyderabad and Moscow. Although these two cities are very far apart, since Hyderabad is kind of central India there are only some Indian, Pakistani, and middle eastern cities (and a few more) in between which is few enough for it to be a darker red color than you may expect by distance (although it is really not that dark red).
You ought to change the answer for Washington to be Washington D.C. Then you'll get the standard type-ins for the city, as just DC doesn't work right now.
Really difficult! I don't know if my eyes/brain aren't good enough, but the dots all look the same colour when I'm in the right general area and there are dozens to choose from...
I'll keep plugging away...
edit: I got it with Rotterdam, and I swear Cairo and Damascus were the same colour as London and Ruhr! Optician time I think...
I got it on my 3rd try, first was some city next to Tehran and then it was Shanghai which I was about to write🤷🏻♂️. But once I got US I just started spamming east US and Canadian cities till I got Philadelphia lol
It is based on this quiz, which uses the urban area data from citypopulation.de . Here the Ruhr is divided into two large agglomerations: The Ruhr (with Essen, Dortmund, and so on), and Cologne / Düsseldorf. While they are two different cities, they are in the same urban area according to citypopulation.de. The population numbers of for example Rotterdam also include The Hague and many more cities and towns around it to get to 3 million people.
This quiz is currently getting a take every few seconds, meaning any answer will be repeated quite often between users: there's only 50 possibilities. The chance of getting the same mystery city twice in a row is 2%, so that should happen a lot with the amount of takes this is getting now
I find I waste a lot of time looking between the legend and the highlit cities trying to determine where they are on the scale. I think it would be a big improvement to use a progression of different colors, rather than shades of a single color.
Maybe im just bad with colors, but i think its kinda confusing and hard to tell how close you are. Why not use a larger spectrum, from red to green, or blue to red?
So going red to any other colour won't affect the amount of colours present, the only way that would happen is by going through multiple colours on the colour scale. However, that would make this unplayable for colorblind people. Hence I chose to go red to white, also following Pandora49s colour scheme.
Cool concept but the color gradient is horrendous. I thought Istanbul was dark red and I was close, but no, it was South Africa...that's half a world away.
I'll keep plugging away...

Great quiz, thanks!
Lucky!
