The urban development of Italy and Greece in ancient times is truly impressive. No wonder that Greek and Roman heritage forged our world

Definitely miles ahead of the rest of Europe at the time, even after going into major decline during the Dark Ages. No real entities that resembled a state existed outside of those shown on the map in 500 BC. Cities that would even come close to the size of these towns wouldn't exist outside the Greco-Roman sphere in Europe arguably until after Charlemagne.
