Some of these, I don't understand. How did Tajikistan, South Vietnam, or Malaysia control chinese territory?

Because it's including territorial claims, I think the quiz is referring to the Spratly Islands dispute in the South China Sea.

And as it includes both the ROC and PRC, the ROC doesn't accept border treaties the PRC have made since 1948, thus the border with Tajikistan is still disputed as per the ROC.

Tajikistan ceded a small amount of Chinese territory in early 2000s, Malaysia controls James Shoal, and South Vietnam controlled the Spratlies until China took control of it in the 70s

The Ottomans never made it anywhere close to China in terms of actual territory controlled. "Vassal" is a very vague definition that does not correspond to territory controlled (or else the UK would historically fall under Chinese control, technically).

Manchuko was a Japanese puppet state. It doesn't count here.

This quiz suffers from a serious lack of focus. What counts as a country?

There are many plausible answers to that question, but the quiz lacks a specific, communicated answer.

Why, for example, are you counting Korea and South Vietnam, but not Guge, the Sikh Empire, or Khitai?

What about the multitude of countries that controlled parts of modern China up to, say, 1000 AD? The quiz implies that the first state in China was Korea, which controlled the entire modern territory until 668 AD. Obviously not, but then why is there no other answer during that period? What specifically is the criteria?
