Bangladesh (to India)??? The country does not even have a total border length incl. those to other countries of 4000km. This is a definite error

Bangladesh is almost entirely surrounded by India, except for a short border with Burma. I found several sources listing it as the fourth-longest border in the world. http://www.infoplease.com/atlas/country/bangladesh.html

go to google maps and zoom in on the northern part of the border. it is insanely convoluted and complex, with numerous enclaves and exclaves.
+1
level 70
Jun 23, 2014
When you look up close you'll see the border along there is very very jagged and convoluted, including exclaves and enclaves and enclaves within enclaves - that'll rattle up the kilometres
+2
level 51
Aug 16, 2016
That area is home to the Cooch Behar complex, and the world only 3rd order enclave. Really a terrible situation considering India and Bangladesh don't have open border, or connected governments (constrasting the Baarle-Hertog complex on the border between Belgium and Netherlands); residents of the enclaves are basically trapped.

Wow - that's fascinating. I had no idea. Looking on Google Earth it's hard to imagine the history of some of the partition choices.
+1
level 53
Nov 14, 2017
Actually, India just recently ratified an agreement that essentially said 'no exclaves no longer', so I imagine the border has shortened significantly. That's mostly because doctors can't cross country borders (or won't cross country borders, ahem ahem), which makes having a heart attack in an exclave or enclave very dangerous.
+1
level 43
Jan 11, 2018
Oh, good. Now, with the new "no exclaves" borders, having a heart attack will be just like having a cold.

+2
level 23
Apr 28, 2014
The Russia-Ukraine border is 1576 km. If the sea border would be included the lenght would be 2295 km. This quiz does however not include sea borders, of it did Japan and China would also be part of the quiz.

+1
level 21
May 16, 2016
It is deceiving because Sweden and Norway are near the poles, so they are skewed to appear bigger in area, whereas Vietnam and Laos are near the equator and have been skewed to seem smaller.

Only some map projections give a realistic comparison of country areas, those further from the equator can appear larger than they would on a globe. Equatorial Africa tends to "look smaller" than it actually is. Nice quiz, thanks!
