We kill approximately 1 trillion fish each year. That is 1,000,000,000,000 fish every year. We must stop this death charade right now.
Fish are an important part of the ecosystem. They balance the food system in every body of water in the world, from tiny ponds to the oceans. Without fish, there will be an overgrowth of algae and other plants. Without them, other animals that consume them (at a regular level) will also start to diminish. The orca, an animal with no predators, even humans, is a species that is dying because the fish they eat are dying.
According to one study in Abaco Island, Bahamas, the fish actually recycle the nutrients they take in, allowing vegetation there to grow. In fact, they are the greatest supply of nutrition in the ecosystem. “We’ve been thinking about the role of fish and the nutrients they’re excreting in these ecosystems for a while now,” says Jacob Allgeier, who led the experiment. "In marine food webs, fish are usually thought of as predators, consuming microorganisms, plants, and smaller animals. But fish have another important, although often overlooked, role in the system. Through excretion, they recycle the nutrients they take in, providing the fertilizer seagrass and algae need to grow."
Thus, fish effectively keep marine life on Planet Earth in check. Please, please, please, we cannot and should not kill so many fish if it can be avoided.
