Every Senator of the 21st Century - Companion Blog

+4

Just under 2,000 people have held the position of United States Senator. Some of these people were honorable, and some were not. However, they all attained this position, and that is certainly something of note.

Most Senior and Most Junior Senators

The current longest-serving Senator is Patrick Leahy. Senator Leahy was elected in 1974 as part of the class of elected officials called the "Watergate Babies", named as such because they were elected after the Watergate scandal.

The most junior senator has actually served the same amount of time as the second- and third-most junior senators. However, Raphael Warnock is considered the most junior of the three senators that began their terms on 20 January 2021 because he was elected in a special election, and not to a full term.

Other Trivia

There is no state that has two senators that both started their terms before 2001. The closest state is Washington, where one Senator was elected in 1993, and the other began their term on 3 January 2001, which means that the previous Senator barely squeaks in as serving in the 21st century.

Dean Barkley served even less time than Goodwin in the Senate...

My bad! I only checked Senators whose entire time was within one calendar year, I didn't even think about someone like Dean Barkley. Thank you!

To me, it's funny that Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock were inaugurated on the same day, but they chose to inaugurate Ossoff (33 years) first, and Warnock (51 years), second, making Ossoff the "senior senator" 😂

Yeah, I find it funny. Ossoff could serve 11 full terms, retire, and still be at least a year or two short of the oldest ever Senator.
