Some Statistics for the Daily Word Search Itself

+13

Introduction

Thanks to Stewart's blogs and charts, we are all aware of how many takes this wonderful minigame is getting every day, and how it has boosted the overall takes of JetPunk minigames in just two months. However, have you ever tried to compile some stats about the puzzles themselves? Well, now you don't have to - this blog shares with you some interesting statistics about the word search puzzles!

A Few Things to Point Out

Before we begin, I just want to point out a few things:

✔ These data only include word search puzzles from March 1 onwards because the minigame underwent a major change prior to that, i.e. "Capitals Thursday" was changed to "History Thursday". On top of that, I missed three word searches in February (because I was preparing for a test), so unfortunately I can't share with you the all-time stats.

✔ This blog only includes data about the puzzles themselves, more specifically, the number of words contained in the grids.

Overview

✔ From March 1 (#29) to April 9 (#68), there were 717 total words in all grids, averaging about 17.9 words per grid.

✔ The puzzle with the most words was puzzle #41 (a Sunday), with 30 words; the puzzles with the fewest words were puzzles #42 (Mon, Mar 14), #53 (Fri, Mar 25), #56 (Mon, Mar 28), and #66 (Thu, Apr 7), all with 11 words.

✔ Overall, Sundays' puzzles had the most words in them (21 in average grid), and Mondays' puzzles had the fewest words in them (14.6 in average grid).

Highest & Lowest

The top 5 puzzles with the most and fewest words are listed below:

Average Words per Grid by Weekday

The following table summarizes the average number of words per grid for each weekday:

DayAvg. words per grid
Monday14.6
Tuesday19.8
Wednesday18.7
Thursday17.3
Friday16.8
Saturday17.2
Sunday21.0

Measures of Spread

The following table summarizes the variance (a measure of how spread out the data are) of the number of words in a grid for each weekday:

DayVariance
Monday24.2
Tuesday25.1
Wednesday20.9
Thursday11.6
Friday14.8
Saturday3.5
Sunday21.6

As you can see, the number of words in Saturdays' puzzles was the most consistent throughout this period, whereas Tuesdays' puzzles were the most unpredictable in terms of the number of words in a grid.

Conclusion

This new minigame has been great so far, and its statistics are pretty interesting too. I am looking forward to seeing this minigame improve even more and compiling more stats to share with you in the future.

Very cool! Not something I had thought about doing. Would be great to see this for the letters themselves used in a grid :)

Has anyone figured out the most used countries ? Iran seems to pop up regularly. Or is it just my imagination ?

Great idea of blog! When we love JetPunk and stats, this blog is welcome.

As said is some other comments, I would really enjoy more stats about letters, countries,... Maybe in a second blog like this one?

I've just noticed that you mentioned you missed 3 days in February. I believe all but one day somewhere was saved on wayback machine, but you could possibly find everything you needed in case you want a more complete data set. (some days are in one date due to difference in time zone)
