Dubrovnik - is it worth it? (Balkan Trip Part 5)

This is the 5th part of my Balkan Trip series, if you haven't read the first part yet, make sure to do so!

Day 10: Kotor -> Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, set of Game of Thrones, the rival of Venice, the mainstream spot for Instagram and the best place in Croatia. We Austrians also say "The Hallstatt of Croatia". It's also a place my father wants to visit so badly, after visiting 60+ countries. So my expectations were already high, let's see if Dubrovnik can meet it.

Unlike every city I've been so far on this trip, the bus station is pretty far from the old town. After exchanging some money to the already familiar Croatian Kuna (btw Croatia will adopt the Euro in 2023), I took the bus to the old town, which costs 15 HRK (2€, to me it's a very annoying currency to calculate).

So I went inside the old town and was fascinated by its beauty. It looks like a dream place you've already seen in a painting or a movie (I did not watch GoT). Even though Kotor kind of looked similar, the scale of Dubrovnik makes a huge difference.

No tourists in February and as warm as spring. Best time to visit.

I did a video call with my father while walking around the city. He was so jealous at me. When I told him that I want to go to Mostar tomorrow and then to Sarajevo, he jokingly said I should stay there until the end and fly back to Vienna. In fact, it was already relatively late when I arrived in Dubrovnik and I didn't have much time to explore. So he convinced me to stay one more night in Dubrovnik.

I really wanted to eat some real sea food, so I went to a fancy restaurant (there really is no other option in Dubrovnik) and made my budget cry, but it was worth it. This is probably the best thing I've eaten the whole trip, even though it's not necessarily local. As someone living in Vienna, eating seafood on a coast is always a pure luxury.

After dinner, I went to the place in Dubrovnik where there is a hole in the wall with the sign saying "Cold Drinks with the most beautiful view". I was a bit disappointed to be honest, the view is just an open ocean. But at least watching the sunset was nice.

I wanted to make my way to the hostel and I had 2 hostels in mind, but because I felt already a bit broke after the dinner, I went for the cheaper hostel, which is located a bit far from the old town. I spent 45 minutes walking there and I finally arrived... and it was closed. It was weird to see a hostel closed which was technically bookable online, but I had no other choice than going back again for 45 minutes for the second hostel I had planned. On my way, my phone battery died, but luckily I have a good orientation skill, so I didn't need it to find the hostel.

It was although tough to find, the pinpoint of the hostel seemed to be a bit off in the end and there was a small pathway missing on the map, but I eventually found it after 20 minutes, just to see that it was... also closed.

But there was a sign on the entrance, that said the owner will be back in 15 minutes. So I sat there and because my phone died, I took random pictures with my camera to see the current time in the photo details. The hostel to be honest didn't really look like it was open. I waited for half an hour and I concluded that it was closed... so hm, what do I do now? I don't have a Plan C.

There was a phone number written on the door of the hostel, so I went to a random bar and asked if I can charge my phone. I had a beer and called the number. They told me there is only a single hostel opened right now in the winter season, which I thought is... very confusing, because there are so many hostels listed online. They sent me the address and I could finally relax. Not only was it the only hostel, I was also the only guest. So I had a whole room with 10 beds for me alone, I basically stayed in a Hotel.

Day 11: Budget traveling Dubrovnik

Budget travel + Dubrovnik are 2 contradicting things, because it is like a theme park, you need to pay entrance fees for everything. Museums costs I think 10€ in general, the walls of Dubrovnik 20€, and the cable car to get the best view of Dubrovnik for about 22€ one way. Although it seems like it's cheaper to book it online. You can also buy a Dubrovnik card, which costs around 34€ for one day to enter the walls and many museums (cable car excluded). It sounds cheap for a family holiday, but definitely not for a student like me.

So I went to the cheapest museum in the old town, which costs 5,40€, the old pharmacy museum. The building itself was nice, the picture shows a small garden of the pharmacy. The inside although, was pretty small. It was interesting, but the whole museum is basically just one room. I went to the Ethnographic Museum after that, which had more to offer and was more interesting to me with different interior designs.

On the same day, they were celebrating Carnival, where the kids dress up and try to sell some "donuts". (In Austria, we call it "Krapfen", in Germany they call it "Berliner", basically a donut without a hole but jam inside, it's very traditional in this season in central europe). I bought 2 and ate them as lunch. I was happy to see some sort of local life, otherwise Dubrovnik would really be just a resort.

Glad I decided to spend a second day here, it really is a beautiful city. Not only the city, the surrounding water is crystal clear.

Because I ran out of things to do without paying, I decided to go up the mountain to get the view over Dubrovnik from above. I asked the tourist office how to get there (I didn't want to pay for the cable car, but it wasn't operating in the winter season anyways) and they told me that I can take a bus to a small village called Bosanka and walk to the top in half an hour. I decided to do so, but I really struggled to catch the bus. I figured out that I was waiting on the wrong bus stop, so I went to the correct one and waited for an hour. (Yes it only comes once per hour.) It was a small bus and I was the only passenger. When I tried to buy a ticket, the bus driver said "Ajde, it's okay". So he let me ride for free... I wonder why, but nice I guess ^^. The ride took about 20 minutes, so if you count the time walking to the top, it took me 50 minutes (actually almost 2 hours if you include the waiting time). So you either pay almost 50€ with return for the cable car to get up in 4 minutes + queing time, or you take my budget route for absolutely free (4€ if you had to pay) to get the epic view ;).

On this day, I tried to eat dinner as cheap as possible. But I didn't want to eat some bread from the supermarket, so I went to the cheapest restaurant in Dubrovnik, according to Google Maps. I thought if it's the cheapest restaurant, it's not expensive right? Well... I paid 14€ for this pizza (which is a lot for me, or maybe I just got used to the prices in the Balkans). It was a nice pizza tho. But if I really want to save my money to travel the world, maybe I should get used to eating bread from the supermarket.

My opinion on Dubrovnik

So, did Dubrovnik really meet my high expectations? My answer is yes, absolutely, BUT it's just not a place for my type of traveling. The old town is just beautiful, but once you explored every street in the old town, it started to get boring on the second day, especially because I didn't spend much time on other attractions like museums. If you really want to enjoy more, you have to pay more. And everything feels like a well thought structure to make you spend more money. But I assume if you have some money to spend, it's a perfect place to visit.

Also the mainstream factor makes it feel a bit less worth in my opinion, it is just one place many people has already been to, so there are not so many new and interesting stories to tell. But apart from that, I was really lucky to visit Dubrovnik in a season with almost no tourists. Everything was comfortable, I never had to wait in a queue and it felt like you have the whole town for your own. The only downside is that some restaurants and hotels and attractions like the cable car are closed, but I can definitely recommend visiting in February, you also get to experience spring quite early.

Day 12: Dubrovnik -> Mostar

My schedule was tight, I only had 2 days to get back home. I was excited to visit an another country I initally didn't plan to visit, Bosnia and Herzegovina. A country I didn't expect to be that interesting. Stay tuned!

I travelled in reverse order to you, from Sarajevo to Mostar to Dubrovnik to Kotor. You were lucky that there were not many tourists in Dubrovnik, otherwise it can be quite overwhelming. And I think I ate at the same pizza shop as well :)

I love these blogs! There is one downside to me reading them though, it makes me want to go to Europe even more than before!

Great blog again Hibasi, Dubrovnik looks beautiful but I suppose because of that it is catering to tourists and therefore the prices go up!

When I was going to Croatia and Bosnia the currency would change each week. One week there were 100 Kuna to £1, the following week it would be 1000. The highest I say it was at around 50,000 to £1 GBP. The money at one time was virtually worthless. There were piles of 1 and 5 kuna notes in the corner of the banks, just thrown away. A loaf of bread cost 100,000 kuna !

A colleague of mine worked it out my measuring and it was cheaper to use the money than toilet paper ! We used to pay for things in German Deutschmarks and US dollars !
