Singapore

Singapore is an island city-nation in maritime Southeast Asia. It is in proximity of nearby nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia. There are four official languages: English, being the lingua franca, followed by Malay, Chinese and Tamil. Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles as a trading post of the British Empire. In 1867, Singapore became under direct control of Britain as part of the Straits Settlements. It was then occupied by Japan during World War II, but later returned to British control after Japan's surrender. Singapore gained independence in 1965 from Malaysia.

Now, Singapore is a highly developed country with the seventh highest GDP per capita in the world. It has also been ranked for one of the safest and cleanest country in the world.
