Nice chart. I've been incorrectly telling people it was 8 million in the 1800's and now is only 3 million. I"ll have to edit my anecdotes.

Yes the population has been creeping upwards over the last couple of decades in particular. This is due to a combination of returning emigrants and new inhabitants. Since about 1990 (coincidentally (?) following the Rep of Ireland football team's first appearance in the World Cup Finals), the country seems to have been "discovered" as a decent place to be. We've had a few ups and downs during this period, but generally speaking we're still up and running!

If this graph is correct you're sort of right about the 1800's figure because Northern Ireland's population did a similar thing and was 1.6 million back then which would drive the population above 8 million. So in the interest of lessening the strain and only having to change one figure you could say the population of the island of Ireland was 8 million in the 1840s and is now at 6.8 million

So Ireland's population in the early 1800s in in the 8 million range, and I believe Englands was 11 million. Now Ireland is at 6 million and England is at 55

There are a lot of Irish Travellers in England. That could explain some decrease in the populations.

Unbelievably, about 4.8 million Irish people have emigrated to the United States since 1800. If I had to guess, I'd say there is much more ancestral Irish DNA in the United States than in Ireland.
