I missed the José Saramago question. Which wouldn't be too bad... if I wasn't currently 1/2 way through one of his books.

Not Poland for Günter Grass?

Djilas is right. Grass was born in Gdansk which is in Poland nowadays.

Agree. Why not Michael Ende for Germany? Americans like Michael Ende, I believe :)

Poland will work now

Hmm, a problematic one, given the rubric. The Free City of Danzig was part of Germany in 1927. The modern name of Germany is Germany. That said, Danzig is now Gdansk, which is now in Poland. The rubric states "give the modern name of the country'. The fact that the borders have changed doesn't mean it wasn't Germany at the time of Grass's birth.

I think the QM has amended his rubric since I wrote this comment.

I'm a little bit troubled with Homer here. Though his place of birth (as his existence) is not known, he mostly is thought to be born in Ionia, now modern Turkey.

Homer isn't a great inclusion in any case, being possibly mythical and without a defined biography even if you agree that he's real.

Can't believe I got them all. Guessed about five of them.
