Source for the Grand Slam titles? Wiki suggests that Australia has 25 titles and Switzerland has 26. Or are you including doubles, juniors, etc.?

I don't think amm14 was suggesting that anyone is ahead of the US. I think amm14 is saying that the second-ranking country is Switzerland, not Australia.

Not sure what source amm14 is using but the wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Grand_Slam_champions_by_country shows Australia with 41 (singles) as of today. The single titles by country are currently USA 138, Australia 41, (West) Germany 32, Spain 31, Switzerland 28, Sweden 25. If you include all the doubles too and count each player separately (as there are pairs from different countries) the order is USA 487, Australia 182, Spain 65, Switzerland 54, Sweden 50, France 47

Yeah, for a few months there in 2016 I was enjoying making fun of my British friends for Brexit, but that November I completely lost the moral high ground.

Surely Brexit is worse than electing Donald Trump. We will need to live with the consequences of Brexit for potentially decades.

So will we. Brexit strikes me as only a very poor governmental decision. Trump's rise is a more existential and far-reaching phenomenon that has pretty much poisoned American society. People can no longer agree on even basic facts. Fifteen percent of Americans believe QAnon is real. Fifteen percent! That's insane. Eighty-five percent of Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen. It's not just that Trump was a bad president. He blighted our culture in a way that will also take several decades to recover from, and he made us all hate each other in the meantime, in addition to enacting terrible policies. I'd take Brexit over Trump any day.

Brexit didn't cause several hundred thousand preventable deaths. It didn't make it impossible for the UK to achieve immunization through herd immunity. It didn't result in an attempted insurrection and attack on parliament. It undoubtedly caused harm to the British economy, just as Trump undoubtedly did harm to the American economy. It also played directly in to Putin's agenda by weakening Western alliances and political and social cohesion. In those ways it was similar. But Trump is worse.

Don't worry about the 15% believing about QAnon. They don't. On the other hand, 15% of people are sufficiently jaded that they will mess with pollsters.

The poll from which I pulled that number asked a series of specific questions, and the answers always broke the same: Republicans (28%) and people who watch far-right news sources (a staggering 48%) are much more likely to buy into QAnon. Even if you subtract for Lizardman's constant, those numbers are astronomical, and there's no basis for dismissing all those responses as prankery. If they were insincere responses, the breakdown should be more chaotic, but it isn't. All the demographics usually connected to the GOP are much more likely to believe this garbage, and the believers constitute an appreciable percentage of the population. https://www.prri.org/research/qanon-conspiracy-american-politics-report/

I get your point. My comment above is a little inaccurate. I think the bigger issue isn't necessarily "messing" with pollsters. It's insincerity.

With no skin in the game, people will lie to promote their team.

For example, 2/3rds of New Hampshire democrats said they would literally rather have a meteor wipe out all life on Earth than have Trump be reelected.

https://www.newsweek.com/majority-democrats-prefer-meteor-wiping-out-humanity-over-trump-re-election-new-hampshire-poll-1486388

These poll results mean nothing. Neither Democrats nor Republicans are uniquely stupid, evil, or gullible. These three things, especially gullibility, transcend politics and are universal to human nature.

QM.. you are dangerously disconnected from reality on this and other American political issues. I know personally *many* people who believe in these conspiracy theories. There are members of Congress who believe in them. And others who attacked Congress with the intent to abduct and murder the House speaker and vice president, and very nearly succeeded. Whatever BS podcast or website or newspaper or whatever you get your information from, devoted to a fault to trying to appear centrist and even-handed, if they are telling you that there is currently some equivalency in terms of accepting facts and reality, they are simply wrong. Not that Democrats or liberals aren't gullible or that they don't often fail to be properly skeptical. Almost everyone does. Still, you are peddling a dangerous false equivalency as you almost always do even going so far as to reject peer-reviewed science on account of imagined, wholly fabricated, liberal bias as you've done before.

And this has real world effects that nobody is wrong to worry about. If a violent attempted insurrection which resulted in several deaths isn't enough to raise concern for you, what about the way that lies perpetrated solely to fluff the ex-presidents ego will seriously impact public health? No, this isn't people messing with pollsters. The data from the CDC confirms that this is true, that in "red states" campaigns to get people vaccinated have slowed down or hit a brick wall because there are huge numbers of people who have been convinced not to get it.. whether that's because they believe Bill Gates is implanting tracking chips, or 5G phone towers are going to activate something in the vaccine and kill everyone, or simply that COVID was an overblown liberal hoax meant to take down the president - all of these positions are equally stupid, and all have the same deleterious effect.

Anti-vaxxers are nothing new. And... 10 or so years ago... they actually skewed liberal. Back when they were responsible for isolated resurgences of mostly-eradicated childhood illnesses in Portland and California. But if you're not aware that things have changed, a LOT, in the past 6-10 years, greatly accelerated in the past 5, and accelerated even more in the past 1, then you don't know what you're talking about.
