I tried both Don Williams and Waylon Jennings. Either of those should have worked. That song led to Amanda becoming one of the most popular girls' names in the 1970s. I had the privilege of seeing Don Williams sing it at the Arkansas State Fair and Livestock Show. So beautiful. I still watch it on YouTube.

It was also a minor hit for the band Times Two in 1990...but the S&G version is definitely the most famous/popular/well known.

The Regents had a hit with Barbara Ann 5 years before the Beach Boys version (which is really a recording of Jan Berry of Jan and Dean backed by the Beach Boys); Also The Who did a great cover of it; Frank Zappa had some amusing "girl songs": "Doreen" (1981) "Charva" (1965); "Babette" (1970 - released in 1988), and the always jolly "Lucille (Has Messed My Mind Up)" (written with bassist Jeff Simmons in 1969 - FZ's version was released 10 years later on Joe's Garage).

Must concede that the "most famous" version of "Michelle" was by the Beatles. However, the charted single version was done by David and Jonathan.

And The Overlanders, who reached no. 1 in UK with it in January 1966, compared to D&J best of no. 11. Beatles never released it as a single in UK (just on album), though did get to no. 1 with it in Norway!
