True, Belgium should be added, and I think there even is a case for Luxembourg, though the history here is complex. Perhaps the question can be rephrased to read former colonies that gained independence.

Most of those small island countries were settled by Polynesians long before New Zealand was, because it's lots of short island hops to get to them, whereas you can't island-hop to New Zealand.

Yes, it is a constituent country, but it isn't a nation, which is the biggest difference, whereas the UK is a nation. I'm not against scottish independence or for it, but right now It's not a nation.

i'm not sure if new zealand had no population during 600 ad or earlier, taking the maori in to consideration. good quiz overall.

The Maori arrived in New Zealand around 1200AD from Eastern Polynesia. There is a myth that there were other people (the Mori Ori) in New Zealand before the Maori arrived, but that has been debunked.

I fully disagree, Vatican city is recognized by the UN, it is just not a member of the UN, not the same here.

I would argue that Sudan's population fell by more than 5% between 2010 and 2017 due to South Sudan gaining independence in 2011. If you will, that lead to a population drop of around 25%.
