Spent too long trying to type capital cities that ended in 'O' before I remembered that the country was the required answer, not the city name.

The first capital ending in O I thought of was Antananarivo, so I spent 5 seconds multiple times trying to type it, thinking I spelled it wrong, before realizing it was the country.

I don't understand the 'sovereign country' one. Did you mean that became sovereign then? I thought all independent countries are considered sovereign.
+17
Level 68

The rest were not sovereign since they were controlled by another country (mainly European ones). I think

Weren't Egypt, Ethiopia, and South Africa sovereign?
+2
Level 79
Jan 5, 2022
Egypt was an autonomous vassal of the Ottoman Empire called the Khedivate of Egypt, which was under British military occupation, at the time. The independent South African Republic apparently existed at the time, but I guess it doesn't count as the same country as modern South Africa?

The others were all colonies of European countries. Most became independent in the 1960s.

Interestingly, Ethiopia was independent in 1900, was captured by Italy in the Second World War, and is now independent again.

Ethiopia likes to claim it was the only country in Africa to never be colonized, yet was invaded by Italy and held for some years. Do they think it doesn't count because a war was going on elsewhere or something?
+4
Level 56
Jan 9, 2022
I think it is more that it was only occupied for a small period of time and that Italy was never able to truly "colonize" it (as in develop a functional colonial administration) so it probably just thought of itself as an occupied nation same as Austria for Germany or Albania for the Italians again. Though this is just my theory and I'm open to corrections.

hey I just wanna say that Somalia has the largest coastline in Africa so therefore it should be in the quiz
+4
Level 68
Jan 25, 2020
Somalia just fails to make it at 2,440 km. It's got long coastlines but they're primarily straight and not curvy, meaning they account for less than they appear.

Where are you getting that number? I just did a quick search and everything I saw said Somalia’s coastline was >3000km. I know coastlines can be difficult to measure, depending on the length of measurement used, you could get wildly different answers.

Using JetPunk's own data, which Quizmaster believes to be the most accurate currently available online. See it here: Countries by Coastline. However, since this is so close to the cutoff, and other sources have it higher as well, I'll allow it as a typein.

Can you reword the "in the Kalahari Desert" clue? "In" means they are entirely inside it, and I was wondering if there was some tiny country (like Rwanda or Burundi) entirely inside the desert. You wouldn't say the US is in the Mojave Desert. The Mojave Desert is in the US. Just as the Kalahari Desert is in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, not the other way around. I'm not trying to nitpick. This legitimately threw me off.
