Your spelling of Loxley is incorrect. The village north of modern Sheffield is spelt Loxley. The accepted alternative spelling is Locksley. Never 'Loxsley'.'

For Little John's weapon, how about adding "cudgel"?

A cudgel is short, what Little John used was long, six feet or more in length. Cudgel and quarterstaff are not synonymous.

If you read the legends with Howard Pyle's illustrations, much archaic spelling is used. More recent printings use more modern spelling.

The reader misses out on the charm, but shouldn't be faulted for his ignorance.

Maid Marion perhaps? Marian is male - Marion is female. You have my permission to skewer me if this is incorrect.

Consider yourself skewered metaphorically. Though I believe Marian is a male, probably mainly Eastern European, name, the lass in question as far as I recall has always been Marian (and Maid Marian Way in Nottingham is thus spelt; they should know)

I always thought it was Maid Marian and was told I had been given the boys spelling of Marion for my name! Most famously the real name of John Wayne- Marion Morrison

Marion ROBERT Morrison. Never forget his original middle name. Or you can call him Marion Mitchell Morrison; that's what his named was changed to.

But yes, it is Maid Marian. Marion, while sounding female, is the male version, and Marian is female.
