Rotuman is generally considered by linguists to be a West Fijian language, making it Melanesian and not Polynesian. However it is still under heavy debate as Rotuman people are genealogically more similar to Polynesians, and there are also loads of loan words from Polynesian languages as well. This is made worse by the fact that Rotuman makes extensive use of metathesis (switching the letters around in words eg. Comfortable ~> Comfturble), which muddles the words up even more and makes it harder to classify.
