I don't think it's right to say that Jesus "wanted" Lazarus to die. His intention was to reveal that the Son of God had the power to raise the dead to life and the only way for that to happen was for someone to die first. So it's not that he actively desired Lazarus' death so much as he accepted that his death was necessary. It would be more accurate to say that Jesus delayed going because he was waiting for Lazarus to die.
