In the Second and the Third Polish Republic the Sejm Marshal (Speaker of the Lower House) would act as Head of State, if the President died or resigned. When Lech Kaczyński died in 2010 the Sejm Marshal, Bronisław Komorowski, was elected President. Therefore he had to give up the office of Sejm Marshal. For a few hours until Grzegorz Schetyna was elected as the new Sejm Marshal the Senate Marshal (Speaker of the Upper House) Bogdan Borusewicz acted as a Head of State.

After the Death of August Zaleski in 1972 the conflict was solved and Stanisław Ostrowski took the office of Exile-President.
